Description
LyondellBasell Industries N.V. is an American multinational chemical company, incorporated in the Netherlands with U.S. operations headquartered in Houston, Texas and offices in London, UK. The company is the largest licensor of polyethylene and polypropylene technologies. It also produces ethylene, propylene, polyolefins, and oxyfuels.
Equity stakes LyondellBasell Industries N.V. holds in other companies.
No position on this side carries a sourced value, so there is nothing to chart. The table still lists 30 of them.
Select a row or a slice for its provenance: the filing it came from, when it was measured, and the arithmetic behind it if it was modelled.
The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 910 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
910 managers reported a position, together holding 246.2m shares, or 76.3% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 322.8m shares outstanding at 29 Apr 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Dutch-incorporated N.V.: share count comes from the 10-Q (period 30 Jun 2026, filed 31 Jul 2026) cover page, which states 323,037,952 ordinary shares outstanding at 29 Jul 2026, EXCLUDING 17,384,546 treasury shares (implied issued total approximately 340,422,498). company.shares_outstanding uses the issued-less-treasury figure, 323,037,952, dated 29 Jul 2026, which is what pct_denominator on every register row uses. The 10-Q's own balance sheet reports a slightly different count, 323,004,034 shares outstanding as of the 30 Jun 2026 period end (33,918 fewer), reflecting share issuance/buyback activity between quarter end and the filing date; the cover-page, filing-date figure was preferred as the more current one.
- COMBINED BALANCE TRAP: LyondellBasell's balance sheet carries one aggregated 'Equity investments' line ($3,963 million at 31 Dec 2025 per the FY2025 10-K; $3,875 million at 30 Jun 2026 per the most recent 10-Q) covering every equity-method joint venture together. Note 10 to the 10-K explicitly gives this as a single combined rollforward (beginning balance, contributions, equity income, distributions, impairments) with no per-venture breakdown. Accordingly every one of the 30 JV holdings rows in this file carries value_usd: null; none of the 30 individual carrying values are disclosed anywhere in the FY2025 10-K or the Q2 2026 10-Q.
- The 30 holdings rows come from two sources in the SAME FY2025 10-K, cross-checked against each other: Exhibit 21.1 (subsidiaries list), whose footnotes give an ownership percentage for 29 named joint ventures and affiliates, and Note 10 (Equity Investments) in the body of the 10-K, which separately lists 13 'significant equity investments' by ownership percentage. Every percentage that appears in both sources agreed exactly (e.g. Louisiana Joint Venture / Louisiana Integrated PolyEthylene JV LLC 50.00% in both; Ningbo ZRCC Lyondell Chemical Co. Ltd. 26.65% in both; HMC Polymers Company Ltd. 28.56% in both). Two Note 10 line items, 'U.S. PO Joint Venture' (60.62%) and 'European PO JV' (50.00%), could not be tied with certainty to a single Exhibit 21 legal entity name; see method_note on the affected rows and unknowns below.
- EVERY pct_of_target value in the holdings array was re-read against its own method_note before this file was written: each one is a whole percentage number (e.g. 50 for 'a 50% interest', 65 for 'a 65% interest', 60.62 for '60.62% ownership'), never that number divided by 100. All 30 holdings in this file are joint ventures or LLCs, the exact habitat flagged as this bug's highest-risk case.
- REGISTER: 13 rows. The single largest holder is Access Industries, LLC (via AI Investments Holdings LLC), a privately-held industrial group controlled by Len Blavatnik, at 64,435,504 shares (19.95% of 323,037,952 shares outstanding; the 2026 proxy statement itself states 20.0% against its own, slightly smaller, denominator of 322,769,286 shares as of 1 Apr 2026). This is a genuine, well-documented controlling/strategic stake (LyondellBasell was formed from Access Industries' 2007 acquisition of Lyondell Chemical combined with Basell, which Access also controlled), not a data error, and it is the reason the register's self-gate total sits above the 25-45% range typical of this project's other companies.
- SELF-GATE (computed from the final file on disk, using the same raw-sum arithmetic the register chart uses; no row in this file has rolls_up_into or is_aggregate set, so every row counts at full value): 13 rows, 195,040,640 total shares, 60.38% of 323,037,952 shares outstanding. This is above the roughly 25-55% band flagged as needing investigation. It was investigated: there is no double-counted holder and no mixed-basis row (every 13F row is fresh Q2 2026 common-stock shares against the same 323,037,952 denominator; Access Industries and the officers group are proxy-statement share counts against the same denominator). The high total is explained by Access Industries' real 19.95% strategic block sitting on top of unusually concentrated institutional ownership for a company with only 323 million shares outstanding (LYB has bought back a large fraction of its float over the past decade). Corroborated first-hand by the coordinator. This project's own 13F-derived register (data/registers/LYB.json, period 31 Mar 2026, separate pipeline) reports total institutional ownership of 202,739,797 shares, 62.76% of the same denominator, with its top twelve at 48.16%. Crucially, Access Industries does NOT appear in that 13F data at all, because it is a strategic holder reporting through Schedule 13D and Form 4 rather than a 13F filer. So the two sources are measuring different things and the 60.38% here is not a double count: the institutional rows in this file sum to roughly 40% of the company, BELOW the snapshot's top-twelve figure, and Access Industries' 64,435,504 shares (19.95%, verified as 64,435,504 / 323,037,952) sit on top of that as a block no 13F would ever show. This is the mirror image of the usual band exception: the register is high because a real strategic holder is visible here and invisible to the 13F pipeline, not because anything is counted twice.
- Vanguard Group Inc, the parent (CIK 0000102909), filed Form 13F-NT (no holdings) for Q2 2026, confirmed directly against its EDGAR submissions feed, so the 7 successor entities were summed rather than substituted (the PNC pattern). An 8th Vanguard entity, Vanguard National Trust Co (CIK 0001984256), was also checked and returned zero LYB shares this quarter, so it correctly contributes nothing rather than a null row.
- Capital Group's 6 registrants (Capital World Investors, Capital International Investors, Capital Research Global Investors, Capital International Inc./CA/, Capital International SARL, Capital International Ltd /CA/) were enumerated from this project's own data/registers/LYB.json snapshot (used only to identify WHO to check) and then each fetched fresh from its own Q2 2026 13F-HR for the actual numbers. The family's LYB position fell from 27,992,453 shares in the Q1 2026 snapshot to 18,583,640 shares in fresh Q2 2026 data, a real reduction, not a missed entity.
- Dodge & Cox held 16,839,152 shares in this project's Q1 2026 register snapshot and 16,965,832 shares (5.3%) per a Schedule 13G/A cited in the 2026 proxy (as of 31 Dec 2024), but its own fresh Q2 2026 13F-HR (CIK 0000200217) contains NO LyondellBasell position at all (checked by both name fragment and by scanning the filing's info-table rows directly for CUSIP N53745100). This reads as a full exit between 31 Dec 2024 and 30 Jun 2026 and is recorded as a note, not a null row, per the project's rule that a checked-and-empty holder gets a note rather than a row.
- T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc. (CIK 0000080255) files its 13F value column in THOUSANDS, confirmed here by an implied-price check (reported value 20,723 against 393,592 shares implies $0.05/share; multiplying by 1,000 to $20,723,000 implies $52.65/share, the plausible reading). value_usd is recorded as 20,723,000. The separate registrant T. Rowe Price Investment Management, Inc. (CIK 0001897612) was checked on its own Q2 2026 13F-HR and holds no LyondellBasell position.
- BlackRock's fresh Q2 2026 13F figure (29,298,859 shares, 9.07%) is preferred over the 2026 proxy statement's citation of a Schedule 13G/A filed 6 Feb 2024 (24,051,819 shares, 7.5%, as of 31 Dec 2023); the two disagree because the 13G is roughly 2.5 years stale, not because either filing is wrong.
- market_cap_usd is computed as shares_outstanding (323,037,952) times the $65.33 close reported by stockanalysis.com for 18 Aug 2026 (an aggregator, not a filing); confidence on that figure alone should be read as reported/aggregator even though the rest of this file is filing-sourced.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- No individual carrying value for any of the 30 equity-method joint ventures: LyondellBasell discloses only one combined 'Equity investments' balance ($3,963 million at 31 Dec 2025; $3,875 million at 30 Jun 2026). Checked the FY2025 10-K Note 10 rollforward and Exhibit 21.1 for a per-entity split; neither gives one.
- Whether Note 10's 'European PO JV' (50.00%) is the same entity as Exhibit 21's 'LyondellBasell Covestro Manufacturing Maasvlakte V.O.F.' (50%, held via Lyondell PO-11 C.V., Netherlands) is inferred from geography and the Covestro partnership described elsewhere in the 10-K's Properties section, but the filing never explicitly equates the two names.
- Whether Note 10's 'U.S. PO Joint Venture' (60.62%) corresponds to Exhibit 21's 'PO JV, LP' (50%, via PO Offtake, LP) and/or 'Technology JV, LP' (49%+1%=50%, via Lyondell POTechLP, Inc. and Lyondell POTechGP, Inc.), and how a 60.62% figure would arise from entities disclosed at 50%, is not explained anywhere in the 10-K. Recorded as its own row rather than merged into either Exhibit 21 entity.
- No Schedule 13D or 13D/A on file for Access Industries or any Access-affiliated entity since 10 Aug 2023; checked the full CIK 0001489393 filing history for SC 13D, SC 13D/A, SC 13G, SC 13G/A. Its post-2023 stake changes are tracked via Section 16 Form 4 filings (as a >10% owner) instead; the exact reason the 13D reporting lapsed (e.g. a Rule 13d-1 exemption becoming available) was not investigated.
- Whether any part of the register sits in Europe and is invisible to 13F reporting (LyondellBasell is Dutch-incorporated and NYSE-listed, so a meaningful share of retail/European institutional float is plausible) was not separately investigated; the self-gate total of 60.38% is already explained by Access Industries' strategic block plus concentrated institutional ownership, so this was not pursued further.
- No holders beyond the 13 rows in this file were sized; several smaller 13F filers appear in this project's Q1 2026 LYB.json register snapshot (e.g. UBS, Northern Trust, Millennium, Citadel, BNP Paribas, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America) but were not individually refreshed for Q2 2026, since the top 8-12 plus the one strategic holder were judged sufficient per the brief.
