Address, industry classification, listing and incorporation come from MetLife, Inc.'s own SEC filer record, so the industry is the SEC's dry classification rather than a marketing label. The website comes from Wikidata. The headcount is the figure the Wikipedia article states for 2025, not a figure this site has verified against a filing. Description
MetLife, Inc. is the holding corporation for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MLIC), better known as MetLife, and its affiliates. MetLife is among the largest global providers of insurance, annuities, and employee benefit programs, with around 90 million customers in over 60 countries. The firm was founded on March 24, 1868. MetLife ranked No. 43 in the 2018 Fortune 500 list of the largest United States corporations by total revenue.
Equity stakes MetLife, Inc. holds in other companies.
No position on this side carries a sourced value, so there is nothing to chart. The table still lists 1 of them.
Select a row or a slice for its provenance: the filing it came from, when it was measured, and the arithmetic behind it if it was modelled.
The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 1,357 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
1,357 managers reported a position, together holding 482.8m shares, or 75.0% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 643.4m shares outstanding at 30 Apr 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- The 13F exclusion, the MetLife case. MetLife itself files a Form 13F-HR (most recently for the quarter ended 30 Jun 2026, filed 14 Aug 2026, accession 0001628280-26-056848, CIK 0001099219), reflecting MetLife Investment Management's (MIM) discretionary management of the general account and third-party institutional client assets, not MetLife's own strategic balance-sheet stakes. Per the brief's exclusion of client-held, index-fund-style positions, no line item from this filing appears in holdings, the same treatment this project's ameriprise.json and pnc.json apply to their own 13F filings.
- Holdings side. The Q2 2026 10-Q and FY2025 10-K were searched for 'equity method', 'joint venture', 'unconsolidated subsidiar', 'MetLife Investment Management', 'noncontrolling interest' and named-entity terms. 'Unconsolidated subsidiar' returns zero hits in either filing (the filings instead use 'equity method' and 'joint venture' as the operative terms). The FY2025 10-K's 'Collectively Significant Equity Method Investments' note discloses a combined balance of $24.7 billion at 31 Dec 2025 (OLPI, REJVs, real estate funds, tax equity and renewable energy partnerships, operating joint ventures), with no per-investee breakout; per the rule against assigning a combined balance to one investee, this figure is reported only in notes/unknowns, not attributed to any holdings row. Chariot Holding Company, LP is the one individually NAMED equity-method investee found (2025 investment, Bermuda reinsurance sidecar vehicle whose subsidiary Chariot Re reinsures MetLife business); it is listed in holdings with every numeric field null because neither filing discloses MetLife's ownership percentage or the investment's dollar carrying value. AmMetLife Insurance Berhad (Malaysia) and AmMetLife Takaful Berhad (Malaysia), together 'MetLife Malaysia', are also named (a fair-value/impairment footnote referencing a 2023 impairment loss) but no ownership percentage, carrying value, or accounting classification (equity method vs. consolidated with noncontrolling interest) is disclosed in either filing searched, so this is not converted into a holdings row; see unknowns. MetLife Ukraine (PJSC MetLife), subject to a pending 2026 disposition per the 10-Q, is a wholly owned consolidated subsidiary, correctly excluded as a holding.
- MetLife has a single class of common stock (one vote per share) plus three series of NYSE-listed non-cumulative preferred stock (MET-PA, MET-PE, MET-PF), which carry no general voting rights over common matters and are excluded from the register, which covers common stock ownership only.
- Vanguard case: PARENT FILED 13F-NT (no holdings), so successors are summed. Vanguard Group Inc (CIK 0000102909) filed a Form 13F-NT notice for Q2 2026; its position is instead reported by Vanguard Capital Management LLC and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC, summed to one register row per the rule.
- Capital Group family: all three entities checked, zero MET holdings found. Capital World Investors (CIK 0001422849), Capital International Investors (CIK 0001562230) and Capital Research Global Investors (CIK 0001422848) were each checked against CUSIP 59156R108 in their full Q2 2026 info tables (grep for the raw CUSIP string, zero hits in all three); none holds MET, so no Capital Group row appears in the register.
- Both T. Rowe Price entities checked. T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc. (CIK 0000080255) holds MET (21,284,689 shares, values rescaled from the filing's thousands convention, see that row's method_note); T. Rowe Price Investment Management, Inc. (CIK 0001897612) holds zero MET (checked by CUSIP absence).
- Cross-check: the 2026 proxy's own 5%-holder table (based on stale Schedule 13G/A filings as of 31 Dec 2025) reports BlackRock, Inc. at 52,733,080 shares (8.15%) and Dodge & Cox at 53,443,191 shares (8.26%), both somewhat higher than the Q2 2026 13F-HR figures used in the register (BlackRock 51,786,925 shares/8.12%; Dodge & Cox 48,431,150 shares/7.59%). This is consistent with both managers having trimmed their MET positions between the 31 Dec 2025 13G date and the 30 Jun 2026 13F date rather than a data error; the more current 13F-HR figures are used as the primary sourced numbers, per the same approach used in ameriprise.json.
- Implied share price cross-check across Q2 2026 13F filers (BlackRock, State Street, Geode, both Vanguard successors, Norges Bank, Northern Trust, FMR, Dodge & Cox): all cluster at approximately $84.6/share as of 30 Jun 2026, confirming none of those filings use a thousands convention; only the T. Rowe Price entity does (rescaled in its row).
- Self-gate: 12 register rows (10 institutional/13F/proxy-5%-holder rows plus 2 insider rows), computed exactly as the chart computes it (Khalaf's 1,158,774 shares counted at full value; the officers group's 2,575,534 reduced by Khalaf's 1,158,774 to a residual of 1,416,760 to avoid double counting; every other row, including the PH Trust and the Vanguard family roll-up, counted at full value since nothing rolls into them), sums to 347,938,863 shares against 637,752,080 shares outstanding, or 54.56%. This is close to the upper end of the expected 25-45% band and near the 55% ceiling that would ordinarily flag a double count. It was checked specifically for that: the PH Trust row (16.40% of the total) and the 'Company Board of Directors, but not in any Director's individual capacity' row that reports the identical 104,607,712 shares from a different angle in the same proxy are the same shares reported once, not twice; the nine institutional 13F rows were each individually sourced from a distinct filer's own info table by CUSIP with no shared entity between them; and the two insider rows are de-duplicated via rolls_up_into/is_aggregate as shown. The elevated total reflects MetLife's unusually large demutualization-era Policyholder Trust position (16.4%) stacked on top of ordinary heavy institutional concentration (Vanguard, BlackRock and Dodge & Cox alone total 26.0%), not an error found on re-check.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- MetLife's percentage ownership interest in Chariot Holding Company, LP and the dollar carrying value of that equity-method investment: not disclosed in the Q2 2026 10-Q or FY2025 10-K beyond unfunded contingent capital commitments ($67 million at 30 Jun 2026) and the combined $24.7 billion 'Collectively Significant Equity Method Investments' balance covering many investees together.
- The identities and individual sizes of the other investees inside the $24.7 billion combined equity-method balance at 31 Dec 2025 (OLPI, REJVs, real estate funds, tax equity and renewable energy partnerships, other operating joint ventures): none is individually named in either filing searched, beyond Chariot.
- AmMetLife Insurance Berhad (Malaysia) and AmMetLife Takaful Berhad (Malaysia) ('MetLife Malaysia'): ownership percentage, current carrying value, and accounting treatment (equity method vs. consolidated with a noncontrolling interest) not found; the only reference located is a 2023 impairment-loss footnote in the FY2025 10-K's fair-value tables, with no current-period detail.
- Vanguard-affiliated 13F filers other than Vanguard Capital Management LLC and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC (for example Vanguard Advisers Inc, Vanguard Fiduciary Trust Co) were not individually checked for MET holdings within the time budget; if any hold MET shares, the true Vanguard family total is somewhat higher than the 65,515,220 shares used here.
- Dollar values for the two insider register rows (Khalaf and the officers/directors group) are null: the proxy's beneficial ownership table gives share counts and a '<1%' label but not a dollar value, and no share price as of the 31 Mar 2026 record date was independently sourced.
- A precise MET share price as of the market_cap_as_of date was not independently sourced; market_cap_usd (61.44 billion) and shares_outstanding cross-check (stockanalysis.com shows 635.48 million shares vs. the 10-Q's 637,752,080, both consistent) come from stockanalysis.com, basis aggregator.
- Other large institutional holders below the ones listed (for example JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, Wellington, Capital Group being absent) were not exhaustively searched beyond the mandated Vanguard/BlackRock/State Street/Geode/Capital Group/T. Rowe Price/Norges Bank checks plus the proxy's named 5%+ holders (PH Trust, Dodge & Cox, BlackRock) and a small set of additional large managers (Northern Trust, FMR); the register above satisfies the brief's top 8 to 12 range.
