Address, industry classification, listing and incorporation come from General Motors Company's own SEC filer record, so the industry is the SEC's dry classification rather than a marketing label. The website comes from Wikidata. The headcount is the figure Wikidata carries for 2019, not a figure this site has verified against a filing. Description
General Motors Company (GM) is an American multinational automotive manufacturing company headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, United States. The company is most known for owning and manufacturing four automobile brands: Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac, each a separate division of GM. By total sales, it has continuously been the largest automaker in the United States, and was the largest in the world for 77 years before losing the title to Toyota in 2008.

The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 1,494 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
1,494 managers reported a position, together holding 753.9m shares, or 83.6% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 901.7m shares outstanding at 17 Apr 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- GM Financial (the wholly owned captive-finance segment) and GM Cruise Holdings LLC (Cruise, GM's wholly owned former robotaxi unit, now refocused on personal-vehicle automated-driving software per the FY2025 10-K) are both consolidated, wholly owned subsidiaries, not equity-method investments, and are excluded from holdings per the brief.
- GM Korea is also excluded as a consolidated operating subsidiary rather than a minority equity-method investee: it is not listed anywhere in the FY2025 10-K's or Q2 2026 10-Q's nonconsolidated-affiliate disclosures, and its manufacturing facilities are described in the 10-K's Item 2 Properties section as part of GM's own GMI (GM International) operating segment alongside GM's Brazil and China plants, indicating GM consolidates it rather than accounting for it under the equity method.
- GM's FY2025 10-K breaks its $5,681 million (31 Dec 2025) total equity in net assets of nonconsolidated affiliates into three buckets: 'Automotive China JVs carrying amount $1,105 million' (spanning the 8 named Automotive China JV rows in this file: SGM, PATAC, SGMS, SGMW, Shanghai OnStar, SGM Norsom, SGM DY, SGM DYPT), 'Ultium Cells Holdings LLC carrying amount $2,355 million' (individually named and sized, recorded here), and 'Other investments carrying amount $2,221 million' (an unnamed bucket that includes, at minimum, SAIC-GMAC, SAIC-GMF Leasing, and, if still held, the Thacker Pass JV with Lithium Americas, plus other smaller unnamed equity-method investments). Per the brief's rule against assigning a combined balance to any single investee, only Ultium Cells Holdings LLC carries a value_usd in this file; every China JV and the Thacker Pass JV carry the ownership percentage the filing (or, for Thacker Pass, the counterparty's press release) states, with value_usd left null. GM's Q2 2026 10-Q confirms the combined total fell slightly to $5,663 million at 30 Jun 2026 but does not restate the individual buckets.
- Vanguard Group Inc (CIK 0000102909) filed 13F-NT (notice, no holdings) for the quarter ended 30 Jun 2026, consistent with its Jan 2026 13F filing-structure reorganisation used elsewhere in this project (see ford.json, pnc.json). Per the brief, Vanguard is represented as a single substituted row summing its two project-verified successor entities, Vanguard Capital Management LLC and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC.
- Capital Group is explicitly NOT the Vanguard-successor case: all three verified Capital Group filing entities (Capital World Investors CIK 0001422849, Capital International Investors CIK 0001562230, Capital Research Global Investors CIK 0001422848) are separate, independently reporting 13F filers, each of which filed its own Q2 2026 13F-HR. Two of the three (Capital World Investors and Capital International Investors) hold GM; the third (Capital Research Global Investors) does not, confirmed both via the filing tool's parser and a direct text search of the raw XML for the GM CUSIP and any 'motor' fragment. The register row sums only the two holding entities.
- Thousands-convention check performed on every register row per the brief. Implied price per share (value/shares) clusters tightly around $77.08 to $77.34 for all managers except T. Rowe Price, whose Q2 2026 13F-HR (CIK 0000080255, cusip 37045V100, 'GENERAL MTRS CO', 'COMM STK' class) reported 3,675,807 shares against a raw value column of $283,332, implying $0.077 per share, roughly 1,000x below the cluster: a clear thousands-convention filer, consistent with the T. Rowe Price / Cohen & Steers pattern flagged in the brief. Rescaled, T. Rowe Price's true value is approximately $283,332,000 (implied price $77.08, in line with the cluster). T. Rowe Price is not included in the top-12 register (3.68 million shares would rank 13th, below Bank of America's 8.17 million) but the reconciliation is recorded here for completeness.
- Register reconciliation on the two largest managers against GM's 2026 proxy statement. The proxy's Security Ownership table (record date 6 Apr 2026, based on 901,656,578 shares then outstanding) separately states BlackRock, Inc. at 74,909,069 shares (8.3%) and State Street Corporation at 46,594,475 shares (5.2%), the only two managers the proxy table itself names as 5%+ holders (the proxy's Related Party Transactions section separately names The Vanguard Group as a third 5%+ holder in 2025 but the beneficial-ownership table itself does not list a Vanguard row, and no Vanguard footnote or share count for the ownership table was found in the filing). This register instead uses each manager's own Q2 2026 Form 13F-HR: BlackRock 77,309,218 shares, State Street 44,441,119 shares. Differences are consistent with normal position drift between the 6 Apr 2026 proxy record date and the 30 Jun 2026 13F measurement date, plus GM's share buybacks reducing the denominator from 901,656,578 (6 Apr 2026) to 877,451,541 (10 Jul 2026, used throughout this register).
- A full-text scan of GM's EDGAR filing history for Schedule 13D and 13G filings in 2025 to 2026 turned up only periodic 13G/A refreshes from the same three index managers already in this register (Vanguard Capital Management 13G filed 29 Apr 2026, Vanguard Group 13G/A filed 26 Mar 2026, State Street 13G filings 10 Nov 2025 and 11 Aug 2025); no new activist 13D or a new strategic 5%+ holder was found.
- Market capitalisation ($75.01bn) and the $85.49 share price are stockanalysis.com's real-time figures as of 17 August 2026, 1:27pm EDT. Cross-check: 877,451,541 common shares x $85.49 implies approximately $75.02 billion, consistent with the reported $75.01 billion market cap.
- GM has a single class of common stock (no dual-class structure), unlike Ford; share_classes is omitted from company for that reason.
- Self-gate check: summing the 12 13F-based, non-aggregate, non-member register rows (Vanguard through Bank of America) gives 362,832,651 common shares against 877,451,541 common shares outstanding, or 41.35%, within the expected 25 to 45 percent range. The two insider rows (the directors/officers-group aggregate and Mary Barra, a member of that aggregate) are excluded from this sum because including both the container and its member would double count, and because Barra's shares already sit inside the aggregate total; excluding both avoids any double count while still keeping the 12-row institutional sum clean.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- Individual carrying values for each of the 8 Automotive China JVs (SGM, PATAC, SGMS, SGMW, Shanghai OnStar, SGM Norsom, SGM DY, SGM DYPT). GM's 10-K discloses only ownership percentages and one combined $1,105 million (31 Dec 2025) carrying value for the whole group, never a per-entity breakdown or share/unit counts. Checked FY2025 10-K Note 7 in full.
- Whether GM's Thacker Pass joint venture with Lithium Americas is still held at its originally announced 38% asset-level interest as of August 2026. GM's own FY2025 10-K and Q2 2026 10-Q contain no individually sized figure and, for the Q2 2026 10-Q specifically, no mention of 'Lithium Americas' or 'Thacker Pass' anywhere in the filing text at all (both terms searched directly across the full document). The 38% figure and $625 million contribution structure come only from Lithium Americas' own October 2024 investor announcement, not from a GM SEC filing.
- Any GM stake or investment size in Niron Magnetics (a rare-earth-free permanent-magnet developer). Public reporting confirms 'GM Ventures' participated in a $33 million multi-investor funding round alongside Stellantis and Volvo Cars, but no source found states GM's individual dollar contribution or resulting ownership percentage; GM's own FY2025 10-K and Q2 2026 10-Q contain no mention of 'Niron'. No holdings row was created for this reason.
- The identities and individual sizes of the smaller, unnamed equity-method investments inside the FY2025 10-K's 'Other investments carrying amount $2,221 million' bucket, beyond the two named entities recorded here (SAIC-GMAC, SAIC-GMF Leasing) and the possible Thacker Pass JV.
- Whether Vanguard-affiliated 13F filers other than Vanguard Capital Management LLC and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC (six additional Vanguard-family CIKs appear in the Q1 2026 aggregator register at data/registers/GM.json: 0000933478, 0001550100, 0001680208, 0001767306, 0001811242, 0001984256) also hold GM shares for Q2 2026. Not individually checked within the time budget; if they do, the true Vanguard aggregate in this register is understated.
- GM's Q3 2026 10-Q was not yet filed as of 17 August 2026 (checked against the EDGAR submissions feed for CIK 0001467858, most recent 10-Q filed 21 Jul 2026 for the period ended 30 Jun 2026), so any equity-investment activity or share-count changes since then are not reflected.
