The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 1,366 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
1,366 managers reported a position, together holding 78.4m shares, or 87.2% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 89.9m shares outstanding at 24 Apr 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- The 13F exclusion, the Ameriprise case. Ameriprise itself files a Form 13F: for the quarter ended 30 June 2026 (filed 14 Aug 2026, accession 0001193125-26-351426, CIK 0000820027), the filing is a '13F COMBINATION REPORT' covering Columbia Management Investment Advisers LLC, Ameriprise Trust Co, Ameriprise Certificate Co, RiverSource Life Insurance Co, RiverSource Life Insurance Co of New York, Threadneedle Asset Management Holdings Ltd, Ameriprise Financial Services LLC, Ameriprise Bank FSB, Columbia Threadneedle Management Ltd, Pyrford International Ltd, Columbia Threadneedle (EM) Investments Ltd and Thames River Capital LLP. It reports 11,508 positions with a total reported value of $494,693,380,028 (about $494.7 billion), which is Columbia Threadneedle's asset-management book (client mutual fund and institutional assets) and RiverSource's insurance general account, not Ameriprise's own strategic balance-sheet stakes. Per the brief's exclusion of client-held index-style positions, no line item from this filing appears in holdings, the same treatment this project's pnc.json applies to PNC's own 13F.
- A second instance of the same pattern: Ameriprise/Columbia Threadneedle subsidiaries also file Schedule 13D and 13G reports on OTHER companies whenever a Columbia-managed fund complex crosses a 5% or 10% ownership threshold in a portfolio holding, and these filings appear in Ameriprise's own EDGAR filing history under CIK 0000820027 as the FILER, not as the subject. Checked two examples directly: a 13D filed 15 Dec 2022 by Columbia Management Investment Advisers LLC and Ameriprise Financial, Inc. reporting a 2.7% stake in Quotient Limited (an unrelated Jersey-incorporated diagnostics company), and a 13G filed 14 Nov 2024 reporting a 6.89% stake in Luna Innovations Incorporated. Every SC 13D, SC 13D/A, SC 13G and SC 13G/A entry in CIK 0000820027's filing history was spot-checked against this pattern and is Columbia Threadneedle reporting on a portfolio company, not a filing about anyone's ownership of Ameriprise stock. None of these belong in holdings (client asset management, same exclusion as the 13F) and none belong in the register (they are not about AMP shares), so the register below relies on 13F-HR data and the 2026 proxy rather than any fresh 13D/G on Ameriprise itself.
- Holdings are empty by design, a sourced finding rather than a gap. The Q2 2026 10-Q and FY2025 10-K were both searched for 'equity method', 'unconsolidated', 'joint venture', 'strategic investment', 'affiliate', 'noncontrolling interest', 'Columbia Threadneedle' and 'consolidated investment entities'. 'Joint venture', 'unconsolidated' and 'noncontrolling interest' return zero hits in either filing. 'Equity method' appears only in the cash flow statement (a $2 million loss from equity method investments for the six months ended 30 Jun 2026, $8 million for the six months ended 30 Jun 2025) and in the FY2025 10-K's general accounting policy (equity method used for entities where Ameriprise holds a >20%/<50% voting interest or exercises significant influence), with no investee ever named. 'Consolidated investment entities' (CIEs) appear 24 times in the 10-Q; these are funds and structured vehicles Ameriprise consolidates for GAAP accounting purposes (asset-backed CLOs and similar), not stakes it holds in other operating companies, and per the brief are not holdings rows. The Q2 2026 10-Q's Note 5 shows a combined 'Other investments' balance of $1,012 million at 30 Jun 2026, which the filing states 'primarily reflect[s] the Company's interests in affordable housing partnerships, trading securities, equity securities, seed money investments in proprietary funds, syndicated loans, credit card receivables and certificates of deposit,' with no individual investee named or sized within that combined figure. Per the rule against assigning a combined balance to one investee, this is reported here rather than converted into invented holdings rows. Columbia Threadneedle Investments UK International Limited, TAM UK International Holdings Limited and the various RiverSource, Ameriprise Trust, Ameriprise Bank and Ameriprise Certificate subsidiaries named throughout the filings are wholly owned operating subsidiaries, correctly excluded.
- Ameriprise has a single class of common stock ($0.01 par value, one vote per share) and no dual-class or founder-control structure. Chairman and CEO James M. Cracchiolo has led the company since its 2005 spin-off from American Express but the 2026 proxy states his and every other director's/officer's beneficial ownership, individually and as the 17-person group, is less than 1% of outstanding common stock.
- Register cross-check against the proxy's own 13G summary. The 2026 proxy (based on stale Schedule 13G/A filings, Vanguard as of 29 Dec 2023 filed 13 Feb 2024, BlackRock as of 31 Dec 2024 filed 5 Feb 2025) reports The Vanguard Group at 13,005,378 shares (14.3%) and BlackRock, Inc. at 9,121,526 shares (10.1%), the only two 5%+ holders it names. The register instead uses each manager's Q2 2026 Form 13F-HR (30 Jun 2026 position date), which is more current and shows Vanguard's successors summing to 11,077,361 shares (12.5%) and BlackRock at 7,935,137 shares (9.0%), both lower than the stale 13G figures. This is consistent with both managers having trimmed their AMP positions over 2024-2026 rather than a data error; the 13F figures are used as the primary sourced numbers.
- Percentages are computed against 88,333,219 common shares outstanding as of 24 Jul 2026 (Q2 2026 10-Q cover page) for every register row, including the two proxy-sourced insider rows (the proxy itself only states 'less than 1%' rather than a precise figure for insiders).
- Market capitalisation of $49.61 billion and the $561.63 share price are stockanalysis.com's figures as of the 17 Aug 2026 market close. Cross-check: 88,333,219 shares x $561.63 implies approximately $49.61 billion, matching the reported market cap closely.
- Self-gate check: 16 register rows (14 institutional/13F rows plus 2 insider rows), summing to 35,376,703 shares (Cracchiolo counted at full value, the 17-person group counted at its residual of 547,412 minus Cracchiolo's 287,510 = 259,902 to avoid double-counting), against 88,333,219 shares outstanding, or 40.05%, within the expected 25 to 45 percent range.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- The identities of the companies inside Ameriprise's combined $1,012 million 'Other investments' balance at 30 Jun 2026 (affordable housing partnerships, equity securities, seed money investments in proprietary funds, syndicated loans). Neither the Q2 2026 10-Q nor the FY2025 10-K names any individual investee within this balance.
- Whether the $2 million (H1 2026) / $8 million (H1 2025) 'loss from equity method investments' relates to one investee or several; not disclosed by name in either filing searched.
- Vanguard-affiliated 13F filers other than Vanguard Capital Management LLC and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC (for example Vanguard Advisers Inc, Vanguard Fiduciary Trust Co, Vanguard Global Advisers) were not individually checked for AMP holdings within the time budget; if they hold AMP shares, the true Vanguard aggregate is somewhat higher than the 11,077,361 shares used here.
- Ameriprise's Q3 2026 10-Q was not yet filed as of 17 Aug 2026 per its EDGAR submissions feed, so any equity-investment activity in that quarter is not reflected.
- Dollar values for the two insider register rows (Cracchiolo and the officer/director group) are null: the proxy's beneficial ownership table gives share counts and a '<1%' label but not a dollar value, and no share price as of the 2 Mar 2026 record date was independently sourced, so a value was not estimated rather than guessed.
- Franklin Resources, Wells Fargo, Wellington Management and Dodge & Cox were checked (all hold AMP: Franklin 183,645 shares/$84,249,041; Wells Fargo 136,013 shares/$62,397,284; Wellington 896 shares/$411,049; Dodge & Cox 1,500 shares/$688,140, all Q2 2026 13F-HR) but are not included in the register rows above because they rank below the fourteen institutional holders already listed, which satisfy the brief's top 8 to 12 requirement (extended to 14 to include the mandated Capital Group and T. Rowe Price family checks).
