Description
Evergy, Inc. is an American investor-owned utility (IOU) with publicly traded stock with headquarters in Topeka, Kansas, and in Kansas City, Missouri. The company was formed from a merger of Westar Energy of Topeka and Great Plains Energy of Kansas City, parent company of Kansas City Power & Light. Evergy is the largest electric company in Kansas, serving more than 1.7 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in Kansas and Missouri. Its more than 40 power plants have generating capacity of 16,000 megawatt electricity in Kansas and Missouri. Service territory covers 28,130 square miles (72,900 km2) in east Kansas and west Missouri.
Equity stakes Evergy, Inc. holds in other companies.
No position on this side carries a sourced value, so there is nothing to chart. The table still lists 2 of them.
Select a row or a slice for its provenance: the filing it came from, when it was measured, and the arithmetic behind it if it was modelled.
The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 904 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
904 managers reported a position, together holding 213.9m shares, or 92.8% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 230.5m shares outstanding at 30 Apr 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Combined-registrant filing: Evergy, Inc. (parent), Evergy Kansas Central, Inc. and Evergy Metro, Inc. file a single combined 10-K and 10-Q. company.shares_outstanding (230,567,172) is the PARENT Evergy, Inc.'s common stock, as stated on the Q2 FY2026 10-Q cover page ('On July 31, 2026, Evergy, Inc. had 230,567,172 shares of common stock outstanding'). The same cover page states Evergy Metro, Inc. and Evergy Kansas Central, Inc. EACH had ONE share of common stock outstanding on that date (both wholly owned by Evergy, Inc.); those subsidiary share counts are not used anywhere in this file.
- The Q2 FY2026 10-Q (filed 6 Aug 2026, period ended 30 Jun 2026) is the most recently filed periodic report as of 19 Aug 2026 per the EDGAR submissions feed for CIK 0001711269, and is fresher than the FY2025 10-K (filed 19 Feb 2026). It was used for shares outstanding and as the primary source for the holdings-side search; the FY2025 10-K was cross-checked for the same Transource/Prairie Wind language and for the Note 8 jointly-owned-plant and Other Assets detail.
- Holdings side: exactly two genuine equity-method holdings were found. Evergy Transmission Company, LLC (a wholly owned Evergy subsidiary) owns 13.5% of Transource Energy, LLC, a private electric transmission joint venture with AEP Transmission Holding Company, LLC (subsidiary of American Electric Power). Evergy Kansas Central, Inc. (a wholly owned Evergy subsidiary) owns 50% of Prairie Wind Transmission, LLC, a private transmission joint venture with subsidiaries of AEP and Berkshire Hathaway Energy Company. Both are explicitly described in the 10-Q and 10-K as accounted for 'under the equity method'. Search terms used across both filings: 'Transource', 'Prairie Wind', 'equity method', 'unconsolidated' (not found, filing does not use this word), 'non-marketable' (not found), 'undivided interest', 'joint venture', 'variable interest entities'.
- Undivided plant interests explicitly EXCLUDED from holdings, per the brief's DTE/Belle River precedent. Evergy's FY2025 10-K Note 1 states: 'Undivided interests in jointly-owned generation facilities are included on a proportionate basis' (i.e. proportionately consolidated as property, plant and equipment, not equity-method investments). Note 8, 'Jointly-Owned Electric Utility Plants', lists Evergy's shares of: Wolf Creek Generating Station (94% indirect nuclear ownership: Evergy Kansas South and Evergy Metro each own 47%), La Cygne Units 1 & 2 (50%), Iatan No. 1 (88%), Iatan No. 2 (73%), Iatan Common (79%), Jeffrey Energy Center (92% consolidated, described elsewhere as an 8% JEC 'ownership share' held by Evergy Kansas Central alone within that total), State Line (40%), Dogwood Energy Center (22%), Sumner County CCGT Facility (50%) and Reno County CCGT Facility. All of these are physical generation-plant property interests reported on a proportionate basis, not equity-method investees, and are deliberately excluded from the holdings array.
- Transource and Prairie Wind carrying values: combined-balance trap. Evergy's consolidated balance sheet reports a residual 'Other' line within Other Assets of $592.5 million at 31 December 2025 ($576.2 million at 31 December 2024), which is not itemized by component in the 10-K or 10-Q and is not confirmed to consist solely of the Transource and Prairie Wind equity-method investments (it may also include other items such as corporate-owned life insurance, referenced elsewhere in the cash flow statement). No dollar figure is attributed to either investee; both holdings carry value_usd: null.
- Register self-gate, computed on the final file exactly as the chart computes it: 30 register rows, 119,437,575 shares (after reducing the 20-person officers-and-directors group to its 105,633-share residual beyond its 16 individually named members, per the standard aggregate/rolls_up_into treatment), against 230,567,172 shares outstanding = 51.80% of the company. This is above the brief's typical 25-45% guidance band but under its 55% hard ceiling; it reflects genuinely heavy institutional concentration at this company (Vanguard 12.37% + BlackRock 12.14% + State Street 7.32% alone total 31.8%) rather than a double-counted holder, all 13 institutional rows and 16 named insiders having been checked individually against each filer's own fresh Q2 2026 13F-HR or the 2026 DEF 14A.
- Vanguard reports through 7 entities for this position (enumerated from this project's own 31-Mar-2026 EVRG register snapshot, then each entity's own fresh Q2 2026 13F-HR fetched for the actual figures used here, per the brief's method). The Vanguard parent, CIK 0000102909, filed Form 13F-NT (a notice carrying no holdings) for the quarter ended 30 June 2026, confirming the successors' summed total (28,511,375 shares) is the correct family figure to use, not a substitute for one entity.
- Capital Group was checked and holds NOTHING in Evergy as of 30 June 2026: all three registrants (Capital World Investors CIK 0001422849, Capital International Investors CIK 0001562230, Capital Research Global Investors CIK 0001422848) were checked against their own fresh Q2 2026 13F-HR information tables and none carries an EVERGY INC row (CUSIP 30034W106). Recorded as a checked-and-zero finding, not a register row, per the brief's rule that a holder found at zero is a note rather than a null row.
- T. Rowe Price and Cohen & Steers file position VALUES IN THOUSANDS on their 13F information tables, a defect this project has hit before on multiple companies. As filed, T. Rowe Price Associates' row read 331,626 shares against a raw $28,663 figure (implying $0.086/share) and Cohen & Steers' row read 3,000,180 shares against a raw $259,306 figure (implying $0.086/share); both are corrected here by multiplying by 1,000 ($28,663,000 and $259,306,000 respectively, implying ~$86.4/share), matching the implied price per share on every other filer's row in this register (e.g. Vanguard Capital Management: $1,266,810,474 / 14,657,069 shares = $86.44/share). T. Rowe Price Investment Management, Inc. (CIK 0001897612), the separate registrant, was also checked per the brief's explicit instruction and holds a small position (16,431 shares, also in-thousands corrected).
- Institutional register rows use 230,567,172 shares outstanding as of 31 July 2026 (Evergy Inc. Q2 FY2026 10-Q cover page), matching the date each 13F filer's own information table was fetched for (30 June 2026 report date, filed Aug 2026). The insider rows (director/officer beneficial ownership table and the 20-person group) instead use 230,284,149 shares outstanding as of the 2 March 2026 record date, which is the denominator the 2026 DEF 14A itself uses. Each row's pct_denominator field states which count it uses; the two sets of percentages should not be compared as if they shared a base.
- C. John Wilder, an independent Evergy director, is Executive Chairman of Bluescape Energy Partners, LLC, an activist energy-focused investment firm that led a board campaign at Evergy culminating in board seats from 2021. His 2,683,187-share proxy beneficial-ownership total includes 2,657,473 shares held by BEP Special Situations V LLC, a Bluescape vehicle, which is the SAME position that appears as 'Bluescape Energy Partners LLC' (2,657,473 shares) in this project's own 13F-derived EVRG register snapshot. To avoid double-counting, only Wilder's insider row is included in this register; no separate Bluescape/BEP 13F row was added.
- Evergy, Inc. has a single class of common stock; the register above covers only common stock. It also has outstanding preferred stock (per the combined 10-Q cover page, checked but not itemized here as it is a separate security not counted in these share and percentage figures).
- Market capitalization of $19.23 billion is the figure published on stockanalysis.com as of 18 August 2026, precise to the figure shown there; it was not independently re-derived from shares outstanding and a separate share price in this research.
- The 2026 DEF 14A's own 'Security Ownership of Certain Beneficial Owners' table (based on stale Schedule 13G/A filings) reports Vanguard at 30,757,337 shares (13.4%), BlackRock at 17,133,688 shares (7.4%) and State Street at 16,465,218 shares (7.1%). Per the brief's rule to prefer the fresh Q2 2026 13F over a stale 13G quoted in a proxy, this register instead uses each manager's own 30 June 2026 13F-HR figures (Vanguard family 28,511,375; BlackRock 27,996,513; State Street 16,868,189), recorded here as the disagreement rather than resolved: the 13G-derived proxy figures are all higher than the fresh 13F figures for Vanguard and BlackRock, and lower for State Street, so the correction does not run in one consistent direction.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- Individual carrying or fair values for Transource Energy, LLC and Prairie Wind Transmission, LLC. Neither the Q2 FY2026 10-Q nor the FY2025 10-K breaks out the residual 'Other' Other Assets balance ($592.5 million at 31 Dec 2025) by equity-method investee, and no per-investee dollar figure was found anywhere in either filing within the time budget.
- Whether the residual 'Other' Other Assets balance consists solely of the Transource and Prairie Wind equity-method investments, or also includes other items (the cash flow statement separately references corporate-owned life insurance income, which may sit in the same 'Other' asset caption); not itemized in either filing checked.
- Institutional holders below T. Rowe Price Investment Management's size (approximately 16,000 shares / 0.007%) were not individually checked against their own fresh 13F-HR filings; this project's own 31-Mar-2026 EVRG register snapshot (data/registers/EVRG.json) lists roughly 20 further holders below this project's cutoff (e.g. American Century, Bank of New York Mellon, Northern Trust, Bank of America, Nuveen, Goldman Sachs) that were not refreshed to Q2 2026 figures here.
- Whether Evergy holds any equity-method or minority interest beyond Transource and Prairie Wind (e.g. in any renewable-generation project company or fiber/broadband joint venture) was not found; search terms 'unconsolidated', 'non-marketable', 'minority interest' and 'variable interest entity' returned no additional equity-method investees in either the 10-Q or the 10-K within the time budget.
- Evergy's Q3 FY2026 10-Q had not yet been filed as of 19 August 2026 per the EDGAR submissions feed for CIK 0001711269 (most recent 10-Q on file covers the quarter ended 30 June 2026, filed 6 August 2026), so any equity-method investment or ownership-percentage change during Q3 2026 would not yet be visible.
