Prairie Wind Transmission, LLC is a Kansas electric transmission joint venture that owns and earns regulated revenue from a 108 mile, 345 kilovolt double circuit line running from the Wichita area substation west to a new substation near Medicine Lodge and then south to the Kansas and Oklahoma border, where it meets a companion line built by Oklahoma Gas and Electric toward Woodward. The venture brings together the Kansas utility Evergy Kansas Central (formerly Westar Energy), which planned and built the line, with transmission subsidiaries of American Electric Power and Berkshire Hathaway Energy. The line was energised at the end of October 2014, roughly three months early and about 63 million dollars below its original 225 million dollar estimate, and it forms part of the Southwest Power Pool's regional backbone, opening up western Kansas wind generation to load centres in the east of the state.
Source
Prairie Wind Transmission, LLC files nothing with the SEC, so none of this comes from a filer record. The description was written for this site in August 2026 from Evergy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025 (SEC), Prairie Wind Transmission's high-capacity transmission line completed ahead of schedule (T&D World) and Prairie Wind Transmission requests permission to build transmission line (North American Windpower). The ownership figures below come from the holders' filings instead, and are sourced row by row.
The disclosed stakes
One row per position. Where a holder reports the same company in two share classes, both rows are shown rather than summed, because the class is part of a position's identity.
Where each figure comes from
A private stake has no ownership form behind it, so the source is always the holder's own filing or disclosure. Anything modelled says so, with the arithmetic.
- American Electric Power Company, Inc.. Ownership percentage is from the AEP Transmission Holding Company (AEPTHCo) Joint Ventures summary table in the FY2025 10-K's MD&A (in-service since 2014; net PP&E of $121 million at 31 December 2025, an unallocated project-level figure, not AEP's carrying value). Note 18 (Equity Method Investments in Unconsolidated Entities) names only ETT and GWAI with dollar carrying values; Prairie Wind's carrying value is folded into AEP's broader $4,402 million 'Deferred Charges and Other Noncurrent Assets' balance at 31 December 2025 ($3,873 million at 31 December 2024), which is not split by investee and also contains unrelated deferred charges, so no carrying value can be attributed to Prairie Wind alone. source
- Evergy, Inc.. Evergy Kansas Central, Inc. (a wholly owned Evergy subsidiary) owns a 50% interest in Prairie Wind Transmission, LLC, a joint venture with subsidiaries of American Electric Power and Berkshire Hathaway Energy Company. Prairie Wind owns a 108-mile, 345 kV double-circuit transmission line providing transmission service in the Southwest Power Pool footprint. Evergy Kansas Central accounts for its investment under the equity method. No investee-specific carrying value is disclosed; see Transource's method_note regarding the combined, non-itemized 'Other' Other Assets balance that is not attributed to either investee here. sourcesource 2
What this page is not
It is not a complete register. It lists the holders who happen to be inside the researched set and disclosed the stake themselves. A private company can have many other shareholders, and nothing here rules them out: venture investors, founders and employees usually appear in no public filing at all. Percentages are of Prairie Wind Transmission, LLC where a holder stated one, and are missing where no holder did.
