sPower is a United States utility scale renewable energy business headquartered in Salt Lake City that develops, owns and operates solar farms, wind farms and battery storage projects and sells their output to utilities and corporate buyers under long term power purchase agreements. Founded with backing from the investment firm Fir Tree Partners, it had grown into the largest independent owner of utility scale solar assets in the country, with about 1.3 gigawatts operating or under construction, when it was sold in July 2017 for 853 million dollars in cash plus the assumption of around 724 million dollars of non recourse project debt. The buyers were the power producer AES and the Alberta Investment Management Corporation, which took roughly equal stakes, AES supplying the operating platform and AIMCo the long duration capital. In early 2021 sPower was merged with AES Distributed Energy to form AES Clean Energy, the partners' combined United States renewables development vehicle.

sPower, LLC files nothing with the SEC, so none of this comes from a filer record. The description was written for this site in August 2026 from Fir Tree Partners Completes Sale of sPower to AES and AIMCo for $1.6 Billion (PR Newswire), AES and AIMCo to acquire sPower for US$1.58 billion (PV Tech) and AES to merge US development arm with sPower, creating 12GW US clean energy pipeline (PV Tech). The ownership figures below come from the holders' filings instead, and are sourced row by row.
The disclosed stakes
One row per position. Where a holder reports the same company in two share classes, both rows are shown rather than summed, because the class is part of a position's identity.
Where each figure comes from
A private stake has no ownership form behind it, so the source is always the holder's own filing or disclosure. Anything modelled says so, with the arithmetic.
- The AES Corporation, as of 31 Dec 2025. FY2025 10-K (period 31 Dec 2025) carries an itemized 'Ownership Interest %' and 'Carrying Value' table for each named equity-method affiliate (this is the exception to the usual combined-balance problem: AES itemizes, unlike the 'Other affiliates' bucket below). sPower row: Carrying Value $502 million (2025), $548 million (2024); Ownership 50% (2025), 50% (2024). A footnote adds detail not separately sized: 'there are two specific portfolios of operating solar and wind assets, OpCo A and OpCo B, in which sPower, LLC owns 51%, resulting in an AES effective ownership of approximately 26% in these portfolios' -- this sub-portfolio detail is already folded into the single $502 million sPower carrying value above and is not broken out as its own row. No more current (Q2 2026) per-entity carrying-value table exists; AES's 10-Qs only disclose a combined equity-method balance (see notes), so the FY2025 10-K figure is the most recent itemized value available. source
What this page is not
It is not a complete register. It lists the holders who happen to be inside the researched set and disclosed the stake themselves. A private company can have many other shareholders, and nothing here rules them out: venture investors, founders and employees usually appear in no public filing at all. Percentages are of sPower, LLC where a holder stated one, and are missing where no holder did.
