Changan Ford builds and distributes Ford and Lincoln brand passenger vehicles for the Chinese market, running four assembly plants together with an engine plant and a transmission plant, with its main base in Chongqing and further assembly at Hangzhou and Harbin. Models built there have included the Focus, Mondeo, Edge, Escape, Explorer and Mustang Mach-E along with Lincoln vehicles, and finished cars move out of Chongqing by road, by barge down the Yangtze and increasingly by rail. It is a 50/50 venture created in December 2012 when the earlier three way Changan Ford Mazda arrangement was split, with Chongqing Changan Automobile Co., Ltd. providing the Chinese manufacturing base and market access and Ford providing the vehicle platforms, brands and product engineering. Sales peaked at 957,499 vehicles in 2016 and have fallen sharply since as domestic Chinese brands gained share.
