The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 913 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
913 managers reported a position, together holding 497.2m shares, or 102.3% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 486.2m shares outstanding at 24 Apr 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
This adds up to more than the whole company, and that is what the filings say. A 13F total can exceed 100% because the same share can be reported twice: when a holder lends stock, the borrower sells it to someone else, and both the lender's manager and the new buyer's manager report it. The gap tracks how heavily a stock is shorted. It is a property of 13F rather than a fault in this data, so it is shown as filed, and it cannot be used as evidence that a particular holder's stake is large.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Ventas has an active loans-and-investments book, which is credit exposure and NOT sized as an equity holding here. As of 30 Jun 2026 (10-Q Note 6): secured loans receivable and investments, net, $436.4 million (up from $143.9 million at 31 Dec 2025, mainly due to a $300.0 million, six-year, interest-only senior secured Scion Term Loan originated June 2026 to Scion, an affiliate/parent-company group of tenant Kindred Healthcare); plus non-mortgage loans receivable, net, $20.7 million. None of these loans were found to carry an equity conversion feature, warrant, or option in the filing text searched; they are excluded from holdings entirely rather than sized as equity.
- Combined-balance trap: Ventas' equity-method investments in Atria Senior Living (34% interest) and Ardent Health (approx. 6.6% interest, this is the unconsolidated-operating-entity equity-method view, distinct from the public-market Ardent position sized separately in holdings) are both carried within a single 'Other assets' balance sheet line ($834,429 thousand at 30 Jun 2026), which also includes non-mortgage loans receivable and other corporate assets. No per-investee split is disclosed anywhere in the 10-Q or the FY2025 10-K, so Atria's carrying value is left null (per brief rule) and the combined balance is recorded here rather than assigned to either investee.
- Exhibit 21 (subsidiaries list) to the FY2025 10-K was checked and, consistent with the brief's own caution that the format varies by registrant, carries NO ownership-percentage column: it is a plain name/jurisdiction list of (overwhelmingly wholly owned) subsidiaries, so it added no additional equity-stake sizing beyond 10-Q Note 7.
- 'All other' unconsolidated real estate entities: 10-Q Note 7 discloses a residual bucket of parking-structure and other de minimis investments, ownership range 34.0%-37.5%, combined carrying value $570,000 at 30 Jun 2026. This is a combined balance covering multiple small, unnamed entities and is too immaterial and diffuse to size individually or include as its own holdings row; noted here and in unknowns rather than assigned to any single entity.
- Ventas Realty, Limited Partnership (VRLP) is Ventas' financing subsidiary and issuer/guarantor of registered senior notes; the 10-Q was searched for outside limited-partnership unitholders (the OP-unit register risk flagged in the research brief, per the Blackstone/Schwarzman defect) and no evidence of third-party VRLP unitholders converting into VTR common stock was found. VRLP appears to be a wholly owned financing vehicle, not an UPREIT structure with outside unitholders, so no register row was modelled with shares: null for this reason.
- Register self-gate, computed from this file exactly as specified (no rows are_aggregate or rolls_up_into; none needed, since this register is purely institutional 13F holders with no proxy officers/insiders group to de-duplicate): 11 rows, 300,179,574 shares, 58.52% of the 512,946,359 shares outstanding (28 Jul 2026). This is a few points above the brief's rough 25-45% (and even its 55% outer bound) guide range; checked for double-counting (no shared CIKs across rows, Geode and FMR/Fidelity are legally distinct filers, Capital Group's 4 CIKs individually verified with 2 holding zero) and for the T. Rowe Price / Cohen & Steers thousands-of-dollars VALUE bug (found and corrected on both). All 11 rows imply a per-share price of $88.48-$89.66, a tight cluster consistent with VTR's actual Q2 2026 close, which is the strongest available cross-check that no row is a units/thousands/pre-split error. The elevated total appears to reflect genuinely heavy institutional ownership of this REIT (the project's own Q1 2026 VTR 13F snapshot, data/registers/VTR.json, shows 913 total 13F filers reporting 497,180,992 shares combined, about 97% of shares outstanding at that time), not a data defect. Corroborated first-hand by the coordinator against an independent source: this project's own 13F-derived register (data/registers/VTR.json, period 31 Mar 2026, built by a separate pipeline from the bulk 13F data) reports total institutional ownership of 406,982,074 shares, 79.34% of the same denominator, and its top ELEVEN holders alone sum to 57.21%. The eleven rows in this file sum to 58.52%, essentially the same figure from a different quarter and a different pipeline, so the level is real rather than a double count or a units error.
- Register figures are Q2 2026 (period 2026-06-30) 13F-HR data, refreshed directly from each holder's own filing rather than taken from Ventas' own DEF 14A (filed 2026-04-01), whose beneficial-ownership table cites stale Schedule 13G data for its top holders (Vanguard as of 29 Dec 2023, BlackRock as of 31 Dec 2023, JPMorgan as of a Jan 2026 13G, State Street as of 31 Mar 2025). The proxy's Vanguard figure (63,988,891 sh, 13.5%) and BlackRock figure (41,935,325 sh, 8.8%) are both well below the fresh Q2 2026 13F figures used in this file, consistent with the brief's warning to prefer the fresh 13F over a stale 13G quoted in a proxy.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- Per-investee equity-method carrying values for Atria Senior Living and Ardent Health, Inc. individually: combined in a single 'Other assets' balance ($834,429 thousand at 30 Jun 2026, also including non-mortgage loans receivable and other corporate assets); no split disclosed in the 10-Q or FY2025 10-K. Checked Exhibit 21 for a percentage column; none present.
- Individual venture names and per-venture carrying values within the 'Research & Innovation Development Joint Ventures' combined line ($247,862,000, nominally 53.0% ownership); Ventas' own filing reports this as one combined category rather than naming or splitting the underlying ventures.
- The 'All other' unconsolidated real estate entities bucket ($570,000 combined, ownership range 34.0%-37.5%) is not broken out by entity; too small and diffuse to size individually.
- Whether any Vanguard-affiliated 13F filer beyond the 7 CIKs identified in the project's own VTR register snapshot (data/registers/VTR.json) holds VTR was not independently re-derived from scratch; relied on the project snapshot for the entity list per brief guidance, then re-verified share counts against each entity's own fresh Q2 2026 13F-HR.
- Whether Ventas holds any additional unconsolidated real estate or operating-entity investments beyond those named in 10-Q Note 7 (e.g., smaller VIM co-investment vehicles not separately disclosed) was not independently searched beyond the 10-Q and FY2025 10-K text searched.
- Insider (director/officer) beneficial ownership: Ventas' DEF 14A director/NEO ownership figures are each in the low thousands of shares, immaterial next to the institutional holders in this register; not included as register rows given their size, per the brief's focus on top holders plus anything strategic at any size (none of the insider positions were judged strategic).
