Address, industry classification, listing and incorporation come from Occidental Petroleum Corporation's own SEC filer record, so the industry is the SEC's dry classification rather than a marketing label. The website comes from Wikidata. The headcount is the figure the Wikipedia article states for 2025, not a figure this site has verified against a filing. The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 1,277 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
1,277 managers reported a position, together holding 796.8m shares, or 80.1% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 994.6m shares outstanding at 30 Apr 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Berkshire Hathaway holds THREE distinct instruments in Occidental, each on its own basis, per the one-instrument-one-basis rule: (1) 264,941,431 shares of common stock (the register row above, 26.5% of common shares outstanding), sourced from Berkshire's Q2 2026 Form 13F-HR and cross-checked against the common-share component of its 14 Aug 2025 Schedule 13G/A (Amendment No. 5); (2) 84,897 shares of Series A Cumulative Perpetual Preferred Stock (100% of Occidental's outstanding preferred, originally 100,000 shares/$10 billion face value issued in 2019, approximately $8.5 billion face value / $8,287 million carrying value remaining as of 30 Jun 2026, 8% cumulative dividend rate), which is a wholly separate class not counted in shares or pct_of_company; and (3) warrants exercisable for 83,911,942.38 additional common shares at a $59.586 strike price (as of the last anti-dilution adjustment reported, Jul 2025), also excluded from shares. None of these are added together in the register; the preferred and warrants are documented here rather than folded into the common-stock row.
- Berkshire is labeled holder_type 'strategic' rather than 'active' because the position originated as a bespoke 2019 preferred-plus-warrant financing of Occidental's Anadarko Petroleum acquisition (not ordinary market accumulation), Berkshire is separately acquiring Occidental's OxyChem business outright (agreement dated 2 Oct 2025, closed 2 Jan 2026, per the FY2025 10-K), and Occidental's own proxy repeatedly identifies Berkshire as a related party and greater-than-5% beneficial owner with an ongoing commercial relationship, not a passive index or mutual-fund style holding.
- Self-gate check, computed exactly as the register chart computes it: 13 register rows. Container 'All executive officers and directors as a group (17 persons)' is reduced to its residual (4,926,491 - 2,103,639 Hollub = 2,822,852) since Hollub rolls up into it; every other row (including Hollub herself) counts at full value. Sum: 264,941,431 (Berkshire) + 70,002,502 (Dodge & Cox) + 87,607,557 (Vanguard) + 55,855,049 (BlackRock) + 46,141,269 (State Street) + 19,900,735 (Geode) + 12,240,048 (Morgan Stanley) + 6,730,796 (Bank of America) + 3,721,356 (FMR) + 2,596,088 (JPMorgan) + 1,034,216 (T. Rowe Price) + 2,103,639 (Hollub) + 2,822,852 (officers/directors residual) = 575,697,538 shares, or 57.59% of 999,637,371 shares outstanding.
- The self-gate total (57.59%) is above the brief's normal 25-45% band and above the 55% double-check line. The excess is verified real common stock, not preferred or warrant leakage: Berkshire's 264,941,431 is confirmed common-only against two independent sources (13F and 13G/A) as detailed above; Dodge & Cox's 70,002,502 is confirmed common-only (the proxy's own footnote separates common shares from warrants); every institutional 13F row above was checked for an implied per-share price against the ~$48.5-49/share cluster seen across all filers for this CUSIP as of 30 Jun 2026, and none showed a 100x/1000x mismatch except T. Rowe Price, which was corrected for the known thousands convention. A large strategic holder (Berkshire at 26.5%) plus substantial ordinary institutional ownership on top of it is exactly the case the brief anticipates can legitimately exceed 55%.
- Vanguard case: Vanguard Group Inc, the parent (CIK 0000102909), filed Form 13F-NT (a notice carrying no holdings) for Q2 2026, so per the brief's rule the successor entities are summed rather than one being substituted: Vanguard Capital Management LLC (CIK 0002100119) and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC (CIK 0002100121), both 13F-HR filers with disjoint OXY positions.
- Capital Group family (Capital World Investors CIK 0001422849, Capital International Investors CIK 0001562230, Capital Research Global Investors CIK 0001422848) was explicitly checked: none of the three holds any Occidental shares as of Q2 2026, verified by a direct CUSIP-string search ('674599105') of each entity's full Q2 2026 13F-HR information-table XML, all negative. No Capital Group row appears in the register as a result.
- T. Rowe Price Investment Management, Inc. (CIK 0001897612), the separate registrant alongside T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc. (CIK 0000080255), was explicitly checked and holds zero Occidental shares as of Q2 2026 (CUSIP-string search of its full 13F-HR info table, negative). Only T. Rowe Price Associates holds a position; see that row's method_note for the thousands-convention correction applied to its raw XML value.
- Norges Bank (CIK 0001374170) was explicitly checked for Q2 2026 and holds zero Occidental shares (CUSIP-string search of its full 13F-HR info table, negative), unlike its position in some other companies in this project; no Norges Bank row appears in the register.
- Carl Icahn (CIK 0000921669), who ran a well-known activist campaign against Occidental in 2022, was checked via his most recent Q2 2026 Form 13F-HR (filed 14 Aug 2026) and holds zero Occidental shares as of that filing; his historical Schedule 13D/A filings on Occidental are all dated 2022 or earlier. No Icahn row appears in the register as a result.
- Holdings side. Occidental's own FY2025 10-K (Note 3, Investments and Related-Party Transactions) discloses a table of 'significant investments in unconsolidated entities' as of 31 Dec 2025: WES 43.1% economic interest / $2,032 million carrying amount, NET Power 40.3% / $0 (impaired to zero in 2025), DEL (separately presented, a net liability) 24.5% / -$220 million, and 'Other various' at $443 million combined, summing to $2,475 million total. Per the rule against assigning a combined balance to one investee, the 'Other various' $443 million is NOT attributed to any named holding here; it covers unnamed smaller equity-method investees and is reported only as this combined figure (see unknowns).
- The Company and BlackRock, Inc. jointly own a direct air capture (DAC) facility development joint venture (the 1PointFive / STRATOS-type project referenced generically as a DAC facility in the 10-Q). Occidental consolidates this joint venture as the primary beneficiary (it is a Variable Interest Entity), with BlackRock's $550 million total commitment carried as a noncontrolling interest ($635 million as of 30 Jun 2026). Because Occidental CONSOLIDATES this entity rather than holding an unconsolidated minority stake in it, it is excluded from holdings per the brief's exclusion of consolidated operating entities; BlackRock's own interest in it is BlackRock's holding, not Occidental's, and is out of scope for this file.
- Occidental does not itself file a Schedule 13D or 13D/A on its own common stock; the several SC 13D and SC 13D/A filings that appear in Occidental's own EDGAR filing history (CIK 0000797468) are Occidental's OWN Schedule 13D filings as reporting person on ITS Western Midstream Partners, LP common-unit holdings (CUSIP 958669103), not filings about anyone's ownership of Occidental. Berkshire Hathaway reports its Occidental common-stock and warrant position on Schedule 13G/A (passive investor status), not 13D; the most recent is Amendment No. 5, filed 14 Aug 2025 (event date 30 Jun 2025).
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- Dodge & Cox's current (2026) Occidental position and its dollar value. Only a Dec 31, 2024 share count was located (via Occidental's own 2026 proxy citing a Feb 2025 Schedule 13G/A); a direct search of Dodge & Cox's EDGAR filing history (CIK 0000200217) for a 2025 or 2026 SC 13G/A on Occidental returned no results within the time budget, and Dodge & Cox does not appear in any 13F info table checked.
- The identities and sizes of the individual investees inside Occidental's combined $443 million 'Other various' unconsolidated-investments balance at 31 Dec 2025. The FY2025 10-K's Note 3 table does not name any investee within that combined figure.
- The exact number of NET Power Inc. (NPWR) shares Occidental holds. The 10-K discloses only a 40.3% economic interest and a $0 GAAP carrying value (impaired in 2025); no share count is given in the 10-K or the Q2 2026 10-Q searched, so a market value of the position (as opposed to its zero book value) could not be computed without inventing a share count.
- Whether Occidental holds any additional named equity-method or cost-method investees beyond WES, NET Power, and DEL; only the FY2025 10-K's Note 3 table and the Q2 2026 10-Q's WES-specific disclosure were searched, using the terms 'equity method', 'unconsolidated', 'joint venture', 'investment in', '1PointFive', 'carbon capture' and 'Western Midstream'.
- Vanguard-affiliated 13F filers other than Vanguard Capital Management LLC and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC (for example Vanguard Advisers Inc, Vanguard Fiduciary Trust Co, Vanguard Global Advisers) were not individually checked for OXY holdings within the time budget; if they hold OXY shares, the true Vanguard aggregate is somewhat higher than the 87,607,557 shares used here.
- Dollar values for the two insider register rows (Vicki Hollub and the 17-person officer/director group) are null: the proxy's beneficial ownership table gives share counts but not a dollar value, and no share price as of the 10 Mar 2026 record date was independently sourced, so a value was not estimated rather than guessed.
- Whether Occidental's warrant class publicly listed as 'OXY-WT' (the $22-strike, 30.4 million shareholder warrants distributed to common shareholders in 2020, distinct from the Berkshire Warrants) is held in any concentration by a register holder above 5%; not investigated, as it is a separate listed security from OXY common stock and out of scope for the common-stock register.
