The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 780 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
780 managers reported a position, together holding 72.3m shares, or 94.5% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 76.5m shares outstanding at 2 May 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Holdings side: searched the latest 10-Q (period 30 Jun 2026, filed 4 Aug 2026) and latest 10-K (fiscal year ended 31 Dec 2025, filed 25 Feb 2026, including Exhibit 21 subsidiaries list) for 'equity method', 'equity investment', 'joint venture', 'non-marketable', 'unrealized gain', 'unconsolidated' and 'venture investment'. No hits for 'equity method', 'equity investment', 'joint venture' or 'non-marketable' in either filing: Avery Dennison does not use equity-method accounting for any investee and reports no joint ventures. It does report a 'venture investments' program (minority, non-controlling stakes mostly in private companies, measured at cost less impairment plus/minus observable price changes, per ASU 2016-01's measurement alternative, carried in 'Other assets'). Only ONE venture investment is individually named and sized in either filing: an approximately $75 million minority investment in Wiliot Ltd. (physical AI for supply chains), completed 27 Apr 2026, disclosed in the Q2 2026 10-Q. The FY2025 10-K discloses that venture investments were made in five further, UNNAMED companies during 2025, with the total carrying value of all venture investments (across all vintages, not just 2025) at approximately $58 million at 31 Dec 2025 and $132.3 million total fair value (mostly non-Level-1) at 30 Jun 2026, a bucket that includes Wiliot plus every other undisclosed venture stake; per the project's rule against assigning a combined balance to one investee, none of those other holdings is sized here, only the aggregate figure is in the holdings row's method_note. Exhibit 21 (list of subsidiaries) was checked and is a bare name list of Avery Dennison's own wholly owned entities (e.g. Avery Dennison International, Avery Dennison RIS International, Fasson entities, Paxar entities) with no ownership-percentage column and no joint-venture or minority-stake entries: a genuine negative, not evidence of a wrong search location.
- Capital Group checked and found to hold NOTHING in Avery Dennison as of Q2 2026: six registrants read directly, not just the usual three. Capital World Investors CIK 0001422849, Capital International Investors CIK 0001562230 and Capital Research Global Investors CIK 0001422848 (each filed 13F-HR 12 Aug 2026 for period 30 Jun 2026) all show no match for 'AVERY' at all. Three further Capital International-complex registrants were also swept per the project's TransDigm precedent: Capital International, Inc./CA/ CIK 0000895213, Capital International Ltd /CA/ CIK 0001065350, and Capital International Sarl CIK 0001065349 (each filed 13F-HR 12 Aug 2026 for period 30 Jun 2026); none of the three holds a matching CUSIP 053611109 row either. No row recorded; this is a genuine negative across all six registrants rather than an omission.
- data/registers/AVY.json (a 31 Mar 2026 13F snapshot) was used ONLY to enumerate the Vanguard family's 8 filing entities and to identify other sizable 13F holders worth checking; every SHARE FIGURE in this file was independently re-fetched from each holder's own Q2 2026 (30 Jun 2026) 13F-HR filing rather than taken from that snapshot, per the project's rule that the register file can be a quarter stale or incomplete. Notably, that snapshot carries NO Capital Group entity at all for AVY (consistent with the negative finding above) and no T. Rowe Price Associates or Investment Management row is flagged as a family in it, so both were checked independently regardless.
- Implied per-share price check: dividing each institutional 13F row's dollar value by its share count gives approximately $162.34 to $162.39 per share across all 12 register rows (Vanguard's 8 entities, BlackRock, Wellington, State Street, Morgan Stanley, both T. Rowe Price entities, Ameriprise, Geode, Invesco, Northern Trust, FMR), all dated 30 Jun 2026: a tight, independent cross-check that every row is the same instrument (CUSIP 053611109, AVY common stock) at the same date. This is well below the live 19 Aug 2026 quote of $182.92 used for market_cap_usd, consistent with the stock's reported intraday gain of +2.93% that day and roughly seven weeks of price movement between the two dates.
- Self-gate computed from this final file: 12 register rows, no row rolls up into another (the directors/officers proxy aggregate has no individually broken-out member rows in this file, since every named director and NEO held under 1% and only the group total is disclosed), so every row counts at full value per the chart's own arithmetic. Total shares: 10,688,928 (Vanguard) + 6,482,687 (BlackRock) + 5,788,479 (Wellington) + 4,044,695 (State Street) + 3,546,264 (Morgan Stanley) + 2,899,976 (T. Rowe Price family) + 2,294,307 (Ameriprise) + 2,172,120 (Geode) + 1,560,021 (Invesco) + 1,056,207 (Northern Trust) + 497,315 (FMR/Fidelity) + 623,813 (directors and officers) = 41,654,812 shares. Against shares_outstanding of 75,788,142, that is 54.96% of the company. This sits just under the brief's 55% flag threshold and was checked for the three usual causes: no holder appears twice (each institutional row is a single named filer or an explicitly summed family with no overlap with any other row; Capital Group was checked and holds zero, so it is a note, not a row), every institutional row is the same CUSIP 053611109 common stock read directly from that holder's own Q2 2026 13F-HR, and the implied-price check above shows all 12 rows agree to within a few cents per share. The high reading appears to be a genuine feature of AVY's concentrated institutional ownership (Vanguard alone at 14.1%, BlackRock at 8.55%, Wellington at 7.64%) rather than an artifact, and is reported per the brief's guidance that a high reading is acceptable once every row is verified.
- Market cap uses a live intraday quote (Nasdaq API, $182.9201, 19 Aug 2026 3:26pm ET) multiplied by the 1 Aug 2026 cover-page share count of 75,788,142; the two dates are about 2.5 weeks apart because no single source carries both a live price and a current share count on the same day. Disclosed rather than treated as precise.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- The four remaining unnamed venture investees from the five made in 2025 (Wiliot was made in 2026 and is separately named) were not identified in either the 10-Q or 10-K; neither filing names them individually.
- No 13D or 13G filed directly against Avery Dennison stock was searched exhaustively beyond the proxy's own 5%-owner table (Vanguard, BlackRock, Wellington) and the register-derived institutional sweep, so any strategic or sovereign holder below the top 12 13F holders checked here, and below 5%, could be missed.
- Named individual director and executive officer holdings (Alford, Butier, Dickson, Flitman, Lopez, Mejia, Reverberi, Siewert, Stander, Wagner, Lovins, Allouche, Yost, Baker-Nel, Walker) were read from the 2026 proxy but not itemized as separate register rows since all are below 1% individually; only the 17-person aggregate is recorded.
- Market cap is a computed figure (live price times the 1 Aug 2026 share count), not a figure read directly off one page that states market cap; see the note on the date mismatch.
