Occidental Petroleum is an American oil and gas company headquartered in Houston, Texas, founded in Los Angeles in 1920 and listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker OXY. It explores for and produces crude oil and natural gas, with its largest position in the Permian Basin of west Texas and New Mexico, where it is the biggest operator, alongside operations elsewhere in the United States and production sharing arrangements in the Middle East and North Africa. It also runs midstream and power assets and an enhanced oil recovery business that reinjects carbon dioxide into mature fields. A separate carbon innovation arm pursues direct air capture and carbon management, built up through the purchases of Carbon Engineering in 2023 and Holocene in 2025. The company roughly doubled its size in August 2019 by acquiring Anadarko Petroleum for about 57 billion dollars.
