Nano Terra, Inc. is a surface engineering and nanotechnology development company in the Boston area of Massachusetts, spun out of the Harvard University laboratory of the chemist George Whitesides, who co-founded it. It works on contract with large corporations and government agencies to turn laboratory surface science into manufacturable products, using soft lithography, molecular self assembly, surface chemistry and engineered nanomaterials to change how a material behaves at its surface, and it holds field exclusive licences to more than fifty patents arising from the Whitesides lab. Partners have included Merck, 3M, Boeing and Lockheed, and in water treatment it agreed an alliance with Pentair to apply its surface chemistry to filtration and treatment media. In 2011 it acquired Surface Logix, a drug development company also founded by Whitesides, extending its reach into healthcare.
Source
Nano Terra, Inc. files nothing with the SEC, so none of this comes from a filer record. The description was written for this site in August 2026 from Nano Terra Acquires Surface Logix, Biomedical Development Firm (Nanotechnology Now press release, April 2011), Pentair, Nano Terra announce strategic alliance in water treatment (WaterWorld) and Nano Terra, Inc company profile (StatNano nanotechnology products database). The ownership figures below come from the holders' filings instead, and are sourced row by row.
The disclosed stakes
One row per position. Where a holder reports the same company in two share classes, both rows are shown rather than summed, because the class is part of a position's identity.
Where each figure comes from
A private stake has no ownership form behind it, so the source is always the holder's own filing or disclosure. Anything modelled says so, with the arithmetic.
- Pentair plc. Exhibit 21 lists Nano Terra, Inc. (United States) with footnote (3), and the footnote key states '(3) 0.9% owned'. A sub-1% stake, included because it is individually named and sized by the filing itself (unlike the combined equity-method and non-marketable-securities buckets discussed in notes, which are NOT sized to any investee). No dollar value or share count disclosed anywhere; 'Nano Terra' does not appear outside Exhibit 21. source
What this page is not
It is not a complete register. It lists the holders who happen to be inside the researched set and disclosed the stake themselves. A private company can have many other shareholders, and nothing here rules them out: venture investors, founders and employees usually appear in no public filing at all. Percentages are of Nano Terra, Inc. where a holder stated one, and are missing where no holder did.
