Mesabi Nugget Delaware is the Delaware organised venture behind an iron making plant at Hoyt Lakes on Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range, built by Steel Dynamics with Kobe Steel of Japan as minority partner. The plant uses Kobe Steel's ITmk3 process to convert iron ore concentrate and coal into high purity iron nuggets, a scrap substitute feed for electric arc furnace steelmaking, and was designed for roughly 500,000 tons a year at a cost of about 235 million dollars. It produced the world's first commercial ITmk3 nuggets in January 2010, with output intended for Steel Dynamics' own mini mills, and drew ore from an adjacent former LTV Steel taconite property. Steel Dynamics idled the Minnesota iron making operations in 2015 when pig iron prices fell below the cost of nugget production, and the site has remained idle since.
Source
Mesabi Nugget Delaware, LLC files nothing with the SEC, so none of this comes from a filer record. The description was written for this site in August 2026 from Steel Dynamics Announces First Production of Mesabi Nuggets, Steel Dynamics Announces Indefinite Idle of Minnesota Operations, SDI, Kobe Steel Agree to Build Minnesota Plant and Steel Dynamics 2025 Form 10-K Exhibit 21.1, list of subsidiaries. The ownership figures below come from the holders' filings instead, and are sourced row by row.
The disclosed stakes
One row per position. Where a holder reports the same company in two share classes, both rows are shown rather than summed, because the class is part of a position's identity.
Where each figure comes from
A private stake has no ownership form behind it, so the source is always the holder's own filing or disclosure. Anything modelled says so, with the arithmetic.
- Steel Dynamics, Inc.. FY2025 10-K, segment note on 'Other' operations: 'Redeemable noncontrolling interests related to Mesabi Nugget (owned 86% by SDI) are $111.2 million at December 31, 2025 and 2024.' This is a joint venture tied to an idled Minnesota ironmaking (iron nugget) operation, grouped with idled ironmaking assets under 'Other' segment. Exhibit 21 confirms Mesabi Nugget Delaware, LLC (Delaware) at 86%. The Q2 2026 10-Q restates 'owned 86% by SDI' with the same $111.2 million redeemable NCI balance unchanged at 30 Jun 2026. That $111.2 million figure is the carrying value of the 14% interest SDI does NOT own, not the value of SDI's own 86% stake, so value_usd is left null here rather than backed into from it. Mesabi Nugget is fully consolidated, not a separate equity-method investment. sourcesource 2source 3
What this page is not
It is not a complete register. It lists the holders who happen to be inside the researched set and disclosed the stake themselves. A private company can have many other shareholders, and nothing here rules them out: venture investors, founders and employees usually appear in no public filing at all. Percentages are of Mesabi Nugget Delaware, LLC where a holder stated one, and are missing where no holder did.
