Gladstone Power Station is a black coal fired generating plant at Callemondah in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia, and the largest and oldest coal station in the state. It has run since 1976 and carries six steam turbine units of 280 megawatts each for a total of 1,680 megawatts, burning coal railed in from the Rolleston mine west of Rockhampton. Most of its output, around 80 percent, goes to the local alumina and aluminium industry, chiefly the Boyne Smelters aluminium plant, with the balance supplying the Port of Gladstone, other heavy industry and the National Electricity Market. The plant is owned by a consortium in which Rio Tinto holds the largest share alongside an NRG Energy unit and Japanese partners including Ryowa II GPS and YKK GPS, and it is run day to day by NRG Gladstone Operating Services. In October 2025 Rio Tinto flagged that closure could be brought forward from 2035 to 2029, when existing supply and operating arrangements expire.
Source
Gladstone Power Station files nothing with the SEC, so none of this comes from a filer record. The description was written for this site in August 2026 from Gladstone Power Station, Wikipedia, Rio Tinto flags early retirement of Queensland's largest coal-fired power station, ABC News and Gladstone power station, Global Energy Monitor. The ownership figures below come from the holders' filings instead, and are sourced row by row.
The disclosed stakes
One row per position. Where a holder reports the same company in two share classes, both rows are shown rather than summed, because the class is part of a position's identity.
Where each figure comes from
A private stake has no ownership form behind it, so the source is always the holder's own filing or disclosure. Anything modelled says so, with the arithmetic.
- NRG Energy, Inc., as of 31 Dec 2025. FY2025 10-K Note 16 (Investments Accounted for by the Equity Method and Variable Interest Entities): equity method investments table lists 'Gladstone, 37.5% Economic Interest, Investment Balance $ -- (zero)' as of 31 Dec 2025. Note 10 (Asset Impairments) states the Company recorded a $39 million impairment loss on the Gladstone equity method investment in 2025 (following $7 million in 2024 and $102 million in an earlier year cited in the impairment discussion), which fully wrote the carrying value down to zero. This is a genuine joint-venture ownership interest in a named operating power station, not a PPA or a generation asset held outright by NRG; it is included here at its filed $0 carrying value rather than omitted, per the brief's guidance to include real but currently zero-value equity-method stakes. source
What this page is not
It is not a complete register. It lists the holders who happen to be inside the researched set and disclosed the stake themselves. A private company can have many other shareholders, and nothing here rules them out: venture investors, founders and employees usually appear in no public filing at all. Percentages are of Gladstone Power Station where a holder stated one, and are missing where no holder did.
