Eastern Petrochemical Company, known as Sharq, operates a petrochemical complex at Jubail Industrial City on Saudi Arabia's Gulf coast, manufacturing olefins, linear low density and high density polyethylene, and mono ethylene glycol. It is an equally held joint venture between Saudi Basic Industries Corporation and Saudi Petrochemical Development Company, a vehicle assembled by a consortium of Japanese firms led by Mitsubishi Corporation with Japanese government backing. SABIC contributes feedstock access and site operations while the Japanese side supplies capital and technical and managerial assistance and lifts roughly a third of the output for marketing in Asia. The company was formed in 1981, started production in 1985 and has since been expanded three times, reaching annual capacity of about 1.40 million tonnes of mono ethylene glycol and 1.55 million tonnes of polyethylene.
