Capline Pipeline Company LLC owns the Capline crude oil system, a 40 inch trunk line of about 644 miles between Patoka, Illinois and terminals at St. James, Louisiana, with Marathon Pipe Line, a Marathon Petroleum subsidiary, acting as operator. The line was built to move crude northbound from the Louisiana coast to Midwest refineries and was for years the largest crude oil pipeline in the United States by capacity. Its owners committed to a reversal in 2019 and it now runs the other way, taking crude from the Patoka hub and from Collierville, Tennessee down to Gulf Coast refiners and export terminals at St. James, at a capacity of roughly 300,000 barrels a day and with heavy Canadian barrels a large part of the volume. The pipeline earns tariff revenue under long term shipper commitments, and the members of the venture are Plains All American, Marathon Petroleum and BP.
