California Steel Industries is a flat rolled steel converter based on a 430 acre site at Fontana, California, on the grounds of the former Kaiser Steel mill. It does not melt its own iron: it buys semi finished steel slab and rolls, pickles, cold reduces, galvanizes and welds it into five finished product lines, hot rolled coil, pickled and oiled, cold rolled, galvanized sheet and electric resistance welded pipe, at an annual capacity of more than two million tons. Its customers are concentrated in construction, steel service centres and energy on the United States West Coast. The business was created in 1984 as an equal joint venture between Japan's Kawasaki Steel, now JFE Steel, and Brazil's Vale, and since February 2022 it has been run as a joint venture between Nucor and JFE Steel after Vale sold out.
Source
California Steel Industries, Inc. files nothing with the SEC, so none of this comes from a filer record. The description was written for this site in August 2026 from California Steel Industries: History, Nucor Completes Acquisition of California Steel Industries (PR Newswire, 3 February 2022) and Wikipedia: California Steel Industries. The ownership figures below come from the holders' filings instead, and are sourced row by row.
The disclosed stakes
One row per position. Where a holder reports the same company in two share classes, both rows are shown rather than summed, because the class is part of a position's identity.
Where each figure comes from
A private stake has no ownership form behind it, so the source is always the holder's own filing or disclosure. Anything modelled says so, with the arithmetic.
- Nucor Corporation. FY2025 10-K: Nucor has a 51% controlling ownership position in California Steel Industries, Inc. (CSI), one of Nucor's six sheet mills. CSI is fully consolidated with the remaining 49% shown as noncontrolling interest, not carried as a separate equity-method investment, so no standalone fair value for Nucor's 51% interest is disclosed and value_usd is null. The identity of the minority (49%) partner was not found in the text of the 10-K or Q2 2026 10-Q searched. source
What this page is not
It is not a complete register. It lists the holders who happen to be inside the researched set and disclosed the stake themselves. A private company can have many other shareholders, and nothing here rules them out: venture investors, founders and employees usually appear in no public filing at all. Percentages are of California Steel Industries, Inc. where a holder stated one, and are missing where no holder did.
