The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 1,665 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
1,665 managers reported a position, together holding 195.2m shares, or 79.2% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 246.6m shares outstanding at 31 Mar 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- No equity holdings recorded. Both the Q2 2026 10-Q (filed 28 Jul 2026, covering the period ended 30 Jun 2026) and the FY2025 10-K (filed 19 Feb 2026) were searched with scripts/filing.py for 'equity method', 'unconsolidated', 'joint venture', 'equity investment(s)', 'investment in', 'affiliate(s)', 'minority interest', 'nonmarketable'/'non-marketable', 'noncontrolling interest', '% interest', 'cost method' and 'available-for-sale'. The only substantive hits describe (a) a boilerplate accounting policy for the equity method applied to any future nonconsolidated affiliate, with no affiliate named or sized, and (b) 'Non-Traded Investments', a combined balance sheet item (Other assets $826.1 million, Other accruals $123.4 million, Other long-term liabilities $667.8 million at 31 Dec 2025) that Note 1/8 of the 10-K identifies as tax credit investments and related tax benefits (e.g. affordable-housing and similar tax credit vehicles using the proportional amortization method), not strategic equity stakes in named companies. Per the brief, tax-credit structured vehicles are excluded and, in any case, the balance is combined across many unnamed vehicles so it could not be assigned to any single investee even if included. No noncontrolling interests, no cost-method or available-for-sale securities, and no named joint venture or affiliate were found in either filing. This is a legitimate sourced finding of an empty holdings array for a paint and coatings manufacturer whose growth strategy is overwhelmingly organic and via wholly owned acquisitions (e.g. Valspar in 2017), not minority stakes.
- Stock split check. Sherwin-Williams' current share count (242,758,151 common shares at 30 Jun 2026, $0.33-1/3 par value) is taken directly from the Q2 2026 10-Q cover page, and all register figures (Q2 2026 13F-HR share counts, the proxy's 247,362,348 shares at 25 Feb 2026) come from filings made in 2026 on the same current basis. Both the Q2 2026 10-Q and the FY2025 10-K were searched for 'stock split', 'split of', 'three-for-one', '3-for-1', 'two-for-one' and 'forward split'; no split was disclosed or referenced in either filing. No cross-period restatement was needed because every figure used here is already on the single, current post-split basis.
- Register reconciliation on Vanguard, BlackRock and State Street. Sherwin-Williams' 2026 proxy (based on Schedule 13G/A review, share count as of 25 Feb 2026, the record date) reports The Vanguard Group at 23,237,722 shares (9.4%), BlackRock, Inc. at 16,178,069 shares (6.5%), and State Street Corporation at 15,912,217 shares (6.4%) as its three largest 5%+ holders, alongside the 401(k) Plan at 14,866,577 shares (6.0%). The register instead uses each manager's Q2 2026 Form 13F-HR (30 Jun 2026 position dates) per the brief, which shows Vanguard's successor entities summing to 20,580,790 shares (lower than the proxy's 13G-based figure, consistent with the 13G/A being filed ~30 Jan 2026 and covering an earlier measurement date, or measuring a different scope of managed accounts), BlackRock at 17,716,320 shares (higher than the proxy figure), and State Street at 15,564,560 shares (lower than the proxy figure). These are treated as differing measurement dates and filing types rather than errors.
- Vanguard Group Inc (CIK 0000102909) filed 13F-NT (notice) rather than 13F-HR for the quarter ended 30 Jun 2026, consistent with the January 2026 reorganisation of Vanguard's 13F filing structure noted elsewhere in this project (see e.g. pnc.json). Per the brief, Vanguard is represented as a single substituted row (sum of Vanguard Capital Management LLC and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC) rather than listed multiple times.
- Percentages for the twelve institutional register rows are computed against 242,758,151 common shares outstanding as of 30 Jun 2026 (Q2 2026 10-Q cover page). The three proxy-sourced rows (401(k) Plan, Petz, and the 19-person group) use the proxy's own denominator of 247,362,348 shares as of 25 Feb 2026, the proxy record date; the 401(k) Plan percentage is quoted directly from the proxy (6.0%) rather than recomputed.
- Market capitalisation of $84.43 billion and the $349.86 share price are stockanalysis.com's real-time figures captured intraday on 17 Aug 2026 (12:04 PM EDT, market open). Cross-check: 242,758,151 shares x $349.86 implies approximately $84.93 billion, close to but somewhat above the reported $84.43 billion market cap, plausibly reflecting a slightly different (more current, post-buyback) share count used by the data provider than the 30 Jun 2026 10-Q figure used here.
- No Schedule 13D or 13G has been filed against Sherwin-Williams common stock since 13 Feb 2024, per the EDGAR filing index for CIK 0000089800, so the register leans on 13F data and the proxy's own summary of 13G/A filings rather than a fresh independent 13G/13D for 2026.
- Self-gate check, stated two ways because the chart and the institutional subtotal are not the same sum. The twelve institutional 13F rows alone give 87,901,013 shares, or 36.2% of the 242,758,151 shares outstanding. The figure the register chart actually draws also includes the 401(k) Plan row, which is neither an aggregate nor a member of one, giving 102,767,590 shares, or 42.3%. Both sit inside the expected range. The 401(k) Plan does not file Form 13F and its shares are therefore not also counted inside any institutional row above, so the 42.3% figure involves no double counting.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- The identities of any individual companies within Sherwin-Williams' Non-Traded Investments balance (tax credit vehicles); the FY2025 10-K discloses only combined balance sheet totals, not individual investees, and states these are used with the proportional amortization method typical of tax credit structures rather than strategic equity investments.
- Whether Vanguard-affiliated 13F filers other than Vanguard Capital Management LLC and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC (e.g. Vanguard Advisers Inc, Vanguard Fiduciary Trust Co) also hold SHW shares. Not checked individually within the time budget; if they do, the true Vanguard aggregate is somewhat higher than the 20,580,790 shares used here.
- SHW's own Q3 2026 10-Q was not yet filed as of 17 Aug 2026 (checked against the EDGAR submissions feed for CIK 0000089800), so no filings later than the 28 Jul 2026 Q2 10-Q were available.
- Additional institutional holders ranked below Bank of America on institutional-ownership aggregators (e.g. T. Rowe Price, AllianceBernstein, Viking Global, Northern Trust, per the project's own Q1 2026 13F register snapshot at data/registers/SHW.json) were not individually re-verified against their own Q2 2026 13F-HR filings, since twelve holders plus the 401(k) Plan already satisfy the brief's top 8 to 12 requirement.
- The precise, non-rounded market capitalisation figure; stockanalysis.com displays only the rounded '84.43B' in its rendered page, so market_cap_usd is recorded to the nearest $10 million as shown rather than to the dollar.
