Description
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is a South Korean maker of semiconductors, consumer electronics and mobile devices whose shares trade on the Korea Exchange under the code 005930 and which is not registered with a United States securities regulator. Select a row or a slice for its provenance: the filing it came from, when it was measured, and the arithmetic behind it if it was modelled.
What the filings say against what the research found
Every holding above was also resolved directly from EDGAR through a precedence rule: the company's own filing outranks a 13D or 13G, which outranks a 13F, which outranks hand research. A 13F reports only US listed, long, US custodied positions, so it is a floor rather than a level. Where sources disagree the higher one leads and the lower is kept beside it.
No position here shows a material gap between sources.
- No SEC CIK for Samsung Electronics (005930.KS). It is a foreign issuer without a US listing under this ticker, so EDGAR has nothing to ingest. Its curated research is unaffected.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Currency and conversion: all Korean won figures were converted at 1 USD = 1,416.4245 KRW, the xe.com mid-market rate read on 16 August 2026 at 13:33 UTC. Underlying won figures are given in each method_note. Samsung Electronics common stock closed at KRW 274,500 on 14 August 2026.
- Two different denominators are in use and they are not interchangeable. Korean shareholding tables usually quote a percentage of common shares (보통주), while the largest shareholder change disclosure quotes a percentage of total issued shares including preferred. Samsung Life Insurance's single position of 497,660,185 common shares is 8.51% of common and 7.49% of total issued at the same moment. Every register row above records which denominator applies.
- Preferred shares (005935) are a separately listed, non-voting class with a dividend preference and they trade at a different price from the common. All value_usd figures in the register are for common shares only. Samsung Life Insurance also holds 4,395,000 preferred shares, which are not valued here because no preferred price was fetched.
- Who holds whom, stated in direction rather than flattened. Upward into Samsung Electronics: Samsung Life Insurance holds 8.51% of the common, Samsung C&T holds 5.11%, Samsung Fire & Marine holds 1.49%, Lee Jae-yong holds 1.67% and Hong Ra-hee holds 1.25%. Downward out of Samsung Electronics: Samsung Electronics holds 23.69% of Samsung Electro-Mechanics, 31.22% of Samsung Biologics, 22.58% of Samsung SDS, 19.44% of Samsung SDI and 15.23% of Samsung Heavy Industries.
- The chaebol control chain runs family to Samsung C&T to Samsung Life Insurance to Samsung Electronics. Samsung Electronics does not hold shares in Samsung C&T or Samsung Life, so the ring is not closed at the Samsung Electronics level: control flows one way into the company and one way out into the manufacturing and bio affiliates.
- Affiliate level cross holding confirmed on the pages fetched: Samsung C&T holds 43.06% of Samsung Biologics against Samsung Electronics' 31.22%, so the two Samsung entities together hold about 74.3%. In Samsung SDS, Samsung C&T holds 17.08% and Lee Jae-yong personally holds 9.20% alongside Samsung Electronics' 22.58%. Samsung SDI holds 3,173,594 shares, 0.36%, of Samsung Heavy Industries.
- Disagreement recorded, not overwritten. The Korea Herald reported on 20 March 2026 that Samsung Life would sell 6,244,658 Samsung Electronics shares and Samsung Fire 1,091,273 shares in a block deal, taking Samsung Life from 8.51% to 8.41% and Samsung Fire from 1.49% to 1.47%, in order to stay under the 10% cap on a financial company's stake in a non-financial affiliate after Samsung Electronics cancelled 73.36 million treasury shares. The 8 June 2026 largest shareholder disclosure still reports Samsung Life at 497,660,185 common shares, and that count divides exactly to the 7.49% of total issued shares the disclosure states, so the June filed figure is used above and the March report is flagged here.
- Market capitalisation does not reconcile cleanly and the reader should treat it as approximate. stockanalysis.com reports a market cap of KRW 1,742.17 trillion and 6.58bn shares outstanding on 14 August 2026, but 1,742.17 trillion divided by the KRW 274,500 common close implies 6.35bn shares, while the Korean shareholding pages give a current issued common count of 5,846,278,608. The USD market cap above is the stockanalysis won figure converted at 1,416.4245.
- The register now runs off one stated common share base: 5,846,278,608 issued common shares, printed on the WiseReport company page (c1010001) read on 21 August 2026. Every percentage in the register divides into that base to the two decimals shown: largest shareholder group 1,151,309,872 is 19.69%, National Pension Service 458,637,667 is 7.84%, treasury 79,870,794 is 1.37%, and the residual float 4,156,460,275 is 71.10%. Nothing is left over, which is the test the earlier version failed.
- Share counts in share_classes are the issued totals published on Samsung's own listing information page as of Q1 2026: 5,919,637,922 common and 815,974,664 preferred, 6,735,612,586 in total. The gap to the current common count is now explained exactly rather than estimated: 5,919,637,922 less 5,846,278,608 is 73,359,314 shares, which is the 73.36 million share treasury cancellation referenced in the March 2026 Korea Herald report. share_classes is left at the Samsung published Q1 2026 figures because that is what its source says, and the register uses the current post cancellation common count. shares_outstanding stays null rather than pick between the two.
- The affiliate stakes carry old last change dates in the Korean disclosure tables (Samsung Electro-Mechanics 18 Sep 2000, Samsung SDS 14 Nov 2014, Samsung SDI 10 Apr 2025, Samsung Biologics 24 Nov 2025). That is a record of stability, not of stale data: the share count is the current one and the date is when it last moved.
- The Samsung Heavy Industries disclosure page also lists a second Samsung entity at 18,150,855 shares, 2.06%, which the page rendering labelled ambiguously. It is not counted in the Samsung Electronics holding above, which uses only the 134,027,281 shares attributed to Samsung Electronics as largest shareholder.
- Samsung Electronics files in Korea, not with the SEC. There is no CIK and no 13F, so none of the holdings above come from a US filing. The register and holdings both derive from Korean disclosure (DART and KIND aggregated by WiseReport) and Korean press reports of those disclosures.
- Correction, 21 August 2026: the register used to add up to 121.19%, which is more company than exists, and it did so for two separate reasons that have both been fixed. First, the 19.69% largest shareholder row is a container, not a holding. Korean issuers disclose the largest shareholder and related parties as a group and also name the members, and the WiseReport member table confirms sixteen members inside the 1,151,309,872 share total, among them Samsung Life Insurance 8.51%, Samsung C&T 5.11%, Lee Jae-yong 1.67%, Samsung Fire & Marine 1.49% and Hong Ra-hee 1.25%, all five of which were also listed separately. The container is now flagged is_aggregate and those five members carry rolls_up_into naming it, so they are still visible but counted once. That alone left about 103%. Second, the free float row was not a residual. Its 75.67% was the Korean index free float ratio, which deducts a different set of holders (co-holders, employee stock, government institutions above 5%, treasury, overseas DRs) from an index share count, so it could not be added to the rows above. The float has been restated as the actual remainder, 4,156,460,275 shares and 71.10%, and treasury shares have been broken out as their own 1.37% row now that a current balance is published. The National Pension Service is not inside either the group or the float: it is the second largest holder in its own right, updated here from an undated 7.8% to the filed 458,637,667 shares and 7.84%. The register now totals 100.00%.
- All register percentages are of common stock, not of the company as a whole, and every row now says so in pct_denominator with the arithmetic against the 5,846,278,608 common base. This matters because Samsung has two listed classes and a percentage of one class is not a percentage of the company: the largest shareholder group is 19.69% of the common but 17.33% of total issued shares including preferred, and the National Pension Service position is 7.84% of the common but roughly 6.9% of total issued. The class figures are preserved in each row's note rather than replaced.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- Resolved on 21 August 2026: the current treasury balance is 79,870,794 shares, 1.37% of the issued common, per the WiseReport company page, and it is now a register row. What is still open is the path between the figures rather than the figure itself: 105.4 million at year end 2025, a 73,359,314 share cancellation that shows up exactly in the drop from 5,919,637,922 issued common to 5,846,278,608, and 79.87 million held now imply further buying after the cancellation that no page fetched itemises.
- Samsung Display. Samsung Electronics holds a large majority of Samsung Display, and Samsung Display in turn holds equity in listed companies, but no page fetched in this task carried the ownership percentage or the Samsung Display level holdings, so it is omitted entirely rather than filled from memory.
- Non-marketable and FVOCI equity investments. The Samsung Electronics Q2 2026 consolidated notes PDF at images.samsung.com returned 404, so the fair value through OCI equity portfolio, which is where private company and minority listed stakes sit, could not be itemised. The Korean business report filed 10 Mar 2026 on DART (rcpNo 20260310002820) and KIND (acptno 20260310001404) carries the 타법인 출자 현황 table, but the DART and KIND viewers are frame based and did not return content to a plain fetch.
- Resolved on 21 August 2026: the National Pension Service position is 458,637,667 shares, 7.84% of the issued common, per the WiseReport company page. What remains unknown is the date that figure is measured on. WiseReport prints the line without an as of date, so the register records the read date instead. The last dated confirmation of the position is the 10 April 2026 press report at 7.8% and a KRW 94.7880 trillion valuation, which is the same holding one step earlier.
- BlackRock's exact holding, still open and now known to be unstable in the source. Two reads of the WiseReport shareholding page on 21 August 2026 returned different aggregations for the BlackRock entities, roughly 2.10% on one read and a figure on the other that was actually the whole 5% reporting block, so the row keeps null values. The bound that can be stated is that the 5% and above block totals 759,028,728 shares (12.98%), the National Pension Service is 458,637,667 of that (7.84%), and the remaining 300,391,061 shares (5.14%) are spread across sixteen institutional reporters including the BlackRock entities. That block sits inside the free float row, and the BlackRock row is marked as rolling up into the float so a future number cannot be double counted.
- Preferred share price (005935), so the preferred component of holder positions, including Samsung Life Insurance's 4,395,000 preferred shares, is unvalued.
- Samsung Life Insurance's own shareholders. The chain runs through Samsung C&T into Samsung Life, but no page confirming Samsung C&T's percentage of Samsung Life was fetched in this task, so that link is described directionally without a number.
