Address, industry classification, listing and incorporation come from Ross Stores, Inc.'s own SEC filer record, so the industry is the SEC's dry classification rather than a marketing label. The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 1,330 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
1,330 managers reported a position, together holding 286.2m shares, or 89.2% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 320.8m shares outstanding at 15 May 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Holdings are empty by design, a sourced finding rather than a gap. The latest 10-K (fiscal year ended 31 Jan 2026, filed 31 Mar 2026, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/745732/000074573226000006/rost-20260131.htm) and the latest 10-Q (quarter ended 2 May 2026, filed 2 Jun 2026, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/745732/000074573226000032/rost-20260502.htm) were both searched via scripts/filing.py search for the terms 'equity method', 'joint venture', 'non-marketable', 'nonmarketable', 'unconsolidated', 'investment in' and 'stock split'. Every term returned zero hits in both filings. Ross Stores is a single-segment off-price apparel and home-fashion retailer (Ross Dress for Less and dd's DISCOUNTS banners); it owns and operates its own stores and distribution centers and reports no equity-method investees, joint ventures, unconsolidated affiliates, or non-marketable equity securities in either filing. This is consistent with the brief's expectation that most off-price/apparel retailers carry no cross-holdings.
- Fiscal year and filing dates. Ross's fiscal year ends on the Saturday closest to 31 January, not a calendar year end. The latest 10-K covers fiscal year 2025, the period ended 31 Jan 2026 (filed 31 Mar 2026). The latest 10-Q covers the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, the 13-week period ended 2 May 2026 (filed 2 Jun 2026). Both were identified by filing date order in the EDGAR submissions feed rather than assumed from a December year end.
- No stock split found. Checked the 10-Q and 10-K text for 'split' (zero hits) and cross-checked the SEC XBRL dei:EntityCommonStockSharesOutstanding history for CIK 0000745732 from Aug 2024 through May 2026: values decline smoothly and continuously from 331,762,504 (16 Aug 2024) to 320,781,076 (15 May 2026), consistent with ongoing share buybacks and showing no discontinuous jump that would indicate a split. All register share counts and company.shares_outstanding sit on this single, unsplit basis.
- Vanguard case: PARENT FILED 13F-NT (the PNC pattern, not the default substitute-one-row pattern). Vanguard Group Inc's parent CIK 0000102909 filed Form 13F-NT (a notice carrying no holdings) for the quarter ended 30 Jun 2026, confirmed both via its EDGAR submissions feed and via a Schedule 13G/A (Amendment No. 16, filed 27 Mar 2026) against Ross Stores stating Vanguard Group Inc underwent an internal realignment on 12 Jan 2026 after which it no longer directly holds ROST shares, with subsidiaries reporting separately going forward. Because the parent reports nothing, the register sums the two successor entities that do hold ROST for Q2 2026: Vanguard Capital Management LLC (CIK 0002100119, 21,040,574 shares) and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC (CIK 0002100121, 14,517,853 shares), total 35,558,427 shares, $7,568,611,188. Other, smaller Vanguard-affiliated 13F filers (e.g. Vanguard Advisers Inc, Vanguard Fiduciary Trust Co, Vanguard Global Advisers) were not individually checked; see unknowns.
- Capital Group family checked and found to hold zero ROST. All three mandated Capital Group entities were checked against CUSIP 778296103 in their Q2 2026 13F-HR info tables: Capital World Investors (CIK 0001422849, accession 0001422849-26-000113), Capital International Investors (CIK 0001562230, accession 0001562230-26-000107) and Capital Research Global Investors (CIK 0001422848, accession 0001422848-26-000094). None of the three files contains the CUSIP anywhere in its info table. Capital Group is not included in the register as a result; this is a sourced zero, not an omission.
- T. Rowe Price: both mandated entities checked. T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc. (CIK 0000080255) holds 5,956,732 ROST shares as of 30 Jun 2026 (values-in-thousands trap corrected, see the register row's method_note). T. Rowe Price Investment Management, Inc. (CIK 0001897612), the separate registrant, filed its own Q2 2026 13F-HR and holds zero ROST shares (CUSIP 778296103 absent from its info table).
- Proxy 5% holders are stale relative to the Q2 2026 13F data used in the register. The 2026 DEF 14A (record date 1 Mar 2026, based on Schedule 13G filings as of that date) lists The Vanguard Group at 39,182,382 shares (12.2%, this is the pre-realignment combined figure superseded by the 13G/A described above) and BlackRock, Inc. at 22,616,546 shares (7.0%). The register instead uses each manager's Q2 2026 Form 13F-HR (30 Jun 2026 position date) as the more current, filing-basis source: the Vanguard successors sum to 35,558,427 shares (11.09%) and BlackRock reports 27,900,923 shares (8.70%), both different from the proxy's 1 Mar 2026 snapshot. Both figures are recorded here; the 13F figures are used as the primary sourced register values because they are more recent and machine-readable at the share level.
- Ross Stores has a single class of common stock; the proxy states 'Common stock is the only issued and outstanding equity security of the Company.' No dual-class or founder-control structure exists. The largest individual insider holder is director George P. Orban (5,665,873 shares, 1.8%), well above CEO James G. Conroy's 212,054 shares; Orban's proxy listing gives no further detail on the source of his position (e.g. no separate 13D/G was checked for him within the time budget).
- Self-gate, computed the way the chart computes it: 10 register rows. Members rolling into 'All executive officers and directors as a group (14 persons)' are George P. Orban (5,665,873) and James G. Conroy (212,054), summing to 5,877,927; the aggregate row's own reported 6,661,944 is reduced to a residual of 784,017. Every other row (Vanguard, BlackRock, State Street, FMR, Geode, T. Rowe Price, Norges Bank, and the two member rows at full value) counts at full value. Total = 35,558,427 + 27,900,923 + 14,643,656 + 10,973,537 + 7,943,924 + 5,956,732 + 5,834,005 + 5,665,873 + 212,054 + 784,017 = 115,473,148 shares, or 35.997% of 320,781,076 shares outstanding, within the expected 25 to 45 percent band.
- Market cap ($75.47bn) and share price ($235.28) are stockanalysis.com's figures as of the 18 Aug 2026 market data pull. Cross-check: 320,781,076 shares x $235.28 implies approximately $75.47 billion, matching the reported market cap closely, and confirming shares_outstanding and share_price_usd sit on the same basis.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- Vanguard-affiliated 13F filers other than Vanguard Capital Management LLC and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC (for example Vanguard Advisers Inc, Vanguard Fiduciary Trust Co, Vanguard Global Advisers) were not individually checked for ROST holdings within the time budget; if any hold ROST shares, the true Vanguard family total is somewhat higher than the 35,558,427 shares used here.
- Dollar values for the three proxy-sourced insider rows (Orban, Conroy, and the 14-person group) are null: the 2026 proxy's beneficial ownership table gives share counts and percentages but no dollar values, and no verified per-share price as of the 1 Mar 2026 record date was sourced, so a value was not estimated rather than guessed.
- Whether George P. Orban's stake traces to a pre-IPO or founding-era position, or to open-market purchases over his board tenure, is not disclosed in the 2026 proxy's beneficial ownership table and was not separately checked against Schedule 13D/G filings within the time budget.
- Institutional holders below the top 8 (e.g. JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Northern Trust, Wellington, Dodge & Cox) were not individually checked; the register's 10 rows already satisfy the brief's top 8 to 12 target while covering all mandated family checks (Vanguard, Capital Group, both T. Rowe Price entities).
