No equity stake in another company appears in KeyCorp's filings. That is the sourced answer, not a hole in the research.

Address, industry classification, listing and incorporation come from KeyCorp's own SEC filer record, so the industry is the SEC's dry classification rather than a marketing label. The website comes from Wikidata. The headcount is the figure the Wikipedia article states for 2023, not a figure this site has verified against a filing. Select a row or a slice for its provenance: the filing it came from, when it was measured, and the arithmetic behind it if it was modelled.
The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 876 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
876 managers reported a position, together holding 933.0m shares, or 86.1% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 1.08bn shares outstanding at 1 May 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Instrument/basis check: every register row above was matched by the CUSIP tag returned in each filer's own 13F information table, and every matched row carries CUSIP 493267108 with class label [COM] or [COMM STK] (KeyCorp Common Shares, the only class in company.shares_outstanding). KeyCorp separately has several listed preferred/depositary series (KEY-PK, KEY-PI, KEY-PJ, KEY-PL per the SEC company-facts ticker list); none of those CUSIPs appear in any row above, and none were mixed into shares or shares_outstanding.
- Self-gate (computed on the final file, same arithmetic as the chart): no register row here has rolls_up_into or is_aggregate with members, so the total is a plain sum of the 11 rows' shares: 157,762,958 + 127,444,638 + 88,464,784 + 51,368,660 + 50,275,640 + 25,619,560 + 20,889,560 + 17,946,974 + 13,141,369 + 9,213,303 + 5,976,547 = 568,103,993 shares, which is 53.24% of shares_outstanding (1,067,128,554). This sits inside the brief's expected band (a strategic holder near 15% on top of an ordinary institutional base can legitimately push the total above 45%) and was cross-checked line by line against the common CUSIP as described above, so it is reported as-is rather than adjusted.
- Scotiabank (The Bank of Nova Scotia) is a strategic bank holder, not exited: fresh Q2 2026 13F (period 30 Jun 2026) shows 157,762,958 KEY common shares, 14.78% of shares outstanding, $3,636,436,181. It holds two KeyCorp board seats under an Investment Agreement dated 12 Aug 2024 (two-tranche purchase, First Closing Aug 2024, Second Closing Dec 2024, both at $17.17/share). See the row's method_note for the full reconciliation against a 6 Jan 2025 Schedule 13D (162,981,232 sh, 14.9%) and the Mar 2026 DEF 14A proxy table (159,876,052 sh, 14.90%); the fresh 13F is used as the primary figure per the brief's instruction to prefer it.
- Holdings side (what KeyCorp owns in others) is empty by design, not by omission. Searched: KeyCorp's FY2025 10-K (filed 23 Feb 2026, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/91576/000162828026010546/key-20251231.htm) and its Q2 2026 10-Q (filed 4 Aug 2026, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/91576/000162828026052671/key-20260630.htm) for the terms 'equity method', 'non-marketable', 'principal investment', 'unconsolidated', 'joint venture', and 'Federal Home Loan Bank'/'Federal Reserve Bank'. Findings: (1) 'Principal investments' (indirect, measured at NAV) fair value $7 million at 30 Jun 2026 ($9 million at 31 Dec 2025); described only as 'primary and secondary investments in private equity funds', no fund or investee named. (2) 'Equity investments' (direct + NAV measured) totalling roughly $84 million at 30 Jun 2026 ($77-86 million range across the fair-value hierarchy table at 31 Dec 2025), again a combined balance across the category with no named investee. (3) LIHTC (Low-Income Housing Tax Credit) and other unconsolidated VIE investments running into the billions in total assets are disclosed only as aggregate portfolio totals administered through Key Community Development Corporation, not as named equity stakes in operating companies. (4) A balance-sheet line 'Other investments' of $949 million (31 Dec 2025) / similar at 30 Jun 2026 is far larger than the combined fair-value-hierarchy 'other investments' total (~$86m), implying the bulk of that balance is Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati and Federal Reserve Bank stock carried at cost, which is regulatory membership stock (redeemable at par, required for FHLB/Fed access), not a market equity stake, and is excluded here for that reason, consistent with how Raymond James's file in this project excluded the same category. (5) Exhibit 21 (subsidiary list, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/91576/000162828026010546/key-123125xexx21.htm) is a bare name list (KeyBank National Association, 100% owned) with no ownership-percentage column and no joint ventures. None of these combined or regulatory balances names a single investee it would be defensible to size, so no holdings row is written; the balances themselves are recorded here per the combined-balance-trap rule.
- market_cap_usd is computed as share_price_usd ($22.79, close 18 Aug 2026 per stockanalysis.com) times shares_outstanding (1,067,128,554, KeyCorp's own 10-Q cover page figure as of 31 Jul 2026); stockanalysis.com's own reported market cap ($24.32bn) matches this computation.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- Whether Capital Group holds through additional registrants beyond the four checked (Capital International, Inc.; Capital World Investors; Capital International Investors; Capital Research Global Investors). This project's brief notes other companies have found up to six Capital Group registrants; a full sweep of all Capital Group-affiliated CIKs was not performed here given the time budget.
- Any smaller Vanguard-affiliated 13F filers beyond the eight entities enumerated from this project's own KEY register snapshot (data/registers/KEY.json). The parent Vanguard Group Inc (CIK 0000102909) filed 13F-NT for Q2 2026 confirming it holds nothing directly, but an exhaustive search of every Vanguard-affiliated CIK was not performed.
- The exact composition of KeyCorp's balance-sheet 'Other investments' line ($949 million at 31 Dec 2025), specifically how much is Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati stock versus Federal Reserve Bank stock versus other cost-method holdings; the 10-K and 10-Q text located did not break this out by name, only the much smaller fair-value-hierarchy subset (~$84-86 million of principal and equity investments).
- Whether Scotiabank's 13D position has been amended since 6 Jan 2025 (a 13D/A would normally accompany a material change in intent or a crossing of certain thresholds); EDGAR full-text search for 'SCHEDULE 13D' on KeyCorp's and Bank of Nova Scotia's CIKs returned only the original filing, so the roughly 5 million share decline between the 13D figure and the fresh Q2 2026 13F is inferred from the two filings' numbers rather than confirmed by an amendment.
