The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 755 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
755 managers reported a position, together holding 71.1m shares, or 75.4% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 94.3m shares outstanding at 31 Mar 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- The BNSF relationship: J.B. Hunt has no equity stake in BNSF Railway or its parent. What exists is a purely commercial joint SERVICE arrangement, not an ownership stake. The 2025 10-K (filed 24 Feb 2026, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/728535/000143774926005294/jbht20251231_10k.htm) was searched for 'BNSF', 'equity method', 'joint venture', 'unconsolidated', 'investment in', 'equity investment', 'non-marketable', 'Investment in affiliate', 'minority interest', 'noncontrolling', and the latest 10-Q (period 30 Jun 2026, filed 24 Jul 2026) was searched for the same terms plus 'BNSF' itself: 'equity method', 'joint venture', 'unconsolidated', 'investment in', 'equity investment' and 'non-marketable' return ZERO hits in the 10-Q. The 10-K's 14 'BNSF' hits are all describing the 1989-founded JBI (intermodal) segment as 'a unique partnership with what is now the BNSF Railway Company... this was a watershed event in the industry and the first agreement that linked major rail and truckload carriers in a joint service environment' (i.e. a commercial contractual relationship for moving intermodal containers, not a legal partnership or equity joint venture), plus routine risk-factor language about relying on Class I railroads including BNSF and Norfolk Southern. Separately, on 30 Sep 2023 J.B. Hunt acquired substantially all of the brokerage ASSETS (not equity) of BNSF Logistics, LLC, 'an affiliate of Burlington Northern Santa Fe, LLC', for $85.0 million cash; this is the reverse direction (J.B. Hunt bought assets from a BNSF affiliate and now wholly owns and consolidates that brokerage business as BNSFL), not J.B. Hunt holding equity in BNSF or Burlington Northern Santa Fe. Exhibit 21.1 to the 10-K (https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/728535/000143774926005294/ex_920942.htm) lists only 8 subsidiaries (J.B. Hunt Transport Inc, L.A. Inc, J.B. Hunt Corp, J.B. Hunt Logistics Inc, Hunt Mexicana S.A. de C.V., FIS Inc, J.B. Hunt Mexico S.C., Gentry Solar LLC), a bare name list with no ownership-percentage column and no BNSF entity of any kind, the same negative pattern seen on Darden and Labcorp per the chunk-prompt guidance: treated as a genuine negative, not evidence of looking in the wrong place. Conclusion: holdings side is legitimately empty, and the BNSF relationship a reader might assume is a joint venture is, on the actual filings, a decades-old commercial rail-truck intermodal service agreement plus one wholly-consolidated 2023 asset acquisition, neither of which is an equity stake in another company.
- Capital Group checked and found to hold NOTHING in J.B. Hunt as of Q2 2026: all six Capital Group filing entities read directly, each its own Q2 2026 13F-HR filed 12 Aug 2026: Capital World Investors CIK 0001422849 (637 rows, has Huntington Bancshares but no JBHT line), Capital International Investors CIK 0001562230 (446 rows), Capital Research Global Investors CIK 0001422848 (426 rows), Capital International Inc /CA/ CIK 0000895213 (302 rows, has a small Huntington Bancshares line but no JBHT), Capital International Ltd /CA/ CIK 0001065350 (150 rows), Capital International Sarl CIK 0001065349 (287 rows). No row in any of the six matches CUSIP 445658107 or any 'HUNT J B' fragment. Genuine negative; no row recorded for Capital Group.
- Janus Henderson: the 31 Mar 2026 snapshot in this project's own data/registers/JBHT.json recorded 'JANUS HENDERSON GROUP PLC' CIK 0001274173 at 3,982,720 shares, but CIK 0001274173 does not itself file 13F forms (it files Schedule 13G/13G-A only); it is a mislabeled parent CIK in that snapshot. The actual 13F-filing Janus Henderson entities identified via EDGAR company search (Janus Henderson Investors US LLC CIK 0000812295, Janus Henderson Investors (Australia) Institutional Funds Management Ltd CIK 0001794678, Janus Henderson Investors (Jersey) Ltd CIK 0001874815, Janus Henderson Investors (Singapore) Ltd CIK 0001810753, Janus Henderson Investors UK Ltd CIK 0001280110, plus the dormant Janus Capital International Ltd CIK 0001727886 which has filed nothing since 2019) ALL filed Form 13F-NT (notice, no holdings) for Q2 2026, period 30 Jun 2026, filed 14 Aug 2026. This indicates Janus Henderson's 13F-reporting entities hold no Section 13(f) securities at all this quarter (a firm-wide exit from reportable positions, or a further reorganisation this project could not fully trace), a genuine and current negative rather than an omission. No row recorded for Janus Henderson.
- Self-gate computed from this final file: 11 register rows, 51,903,397 total shares (Johnelle Hunt + Vanguard family + BlackRock + AQR + State Street + the officers/directors aggregate + Geode + Morgan Stanley + Invesco + JPMorgan + T. Rowe Price Associates; no row rolls up into another, every row counts at full value), against shares_outstanding 93,914,939 = 55.27% of the company. This is above the 25-45% typical band and just over the wider 55% outlier threshold. Checked for the three usual causes: not a mixed-instrument error (every institutional row is CUSIP 445658107 common stock, JPMorgan's option-derivative CUSIP explicitly excluded); not a mixed-basis error (T. Rowe Price's single thousands-denominated registrant was rescaled and cross-checked by implied price); not a double-counted holder (Johnelle Hunt sits entirely outside the officers/directors aggregate per the proxy's own tables, and her son Bryan Hunt's separate 70,697-share holding inside that aggregate is not drawn from either of her two LLC vehicles). The elevated total is explained by one real, sourced, and unusually large factor: the founding family (Johnelle Hunt, widow of founder J.B. Hunt) alone holds 19.51% of the company through a Form 5 directly read, on top of a fairly complete sweep of the 9 largest 13F institutional holders (33.3% of the company by themselves) plus the officers/directors group (2.5%). This is exactly the founder/insider 'story' the brief asks this database to surface for a company with a controlling family stake, not an arithmetic defect.
- Implied per-share price check: dividing each institution's Q2 2026 13F dollar value by its share count returns approximately $285.0 to $289.5 per share for every filer, all dated 30 Jun 2026: Vanguard's 7 entities, BlackRock, State Street, Geode, Morgan Stanley, Invesco, JPMorgan and T. Rowe Price Associates (after the thousands correction) all cluster in that range; only AQR sits slightly lower at ~$285.0/sh. This cluster is independently plausible: JBHT's 52-week trading range as of the 19 Aug 2026 quote used for market_cap_usd was $130.12 to $299.76, and the stock closed near its highs in late June 2026 before pulling back to $272.905 by 19 Aug 2026, so a ~$289/sh implied price on 30 Jun 2026 sits comfortably inside that range and near its top.
- Current price used for market_cap_usd is a live intraday quote (Nasdaq API, $272.905, 19 Aug 2026 3:51pm ET) multiplied by the 30 Jun 2026 10-Q cover-page share count (93,914,939); the two dates are about seven weeks apart because no single filing carries both a current price and a current share count. Disclosed rather than treated as precise.
- J.B. Hunt has bought back stock steadily: the cover page of the 30 Jun 2026 10-Q (filed 24 Jul 2026) is the newest share count found and is used throughout this file (93,914,939 shares). The 2026 DEF 14A (filed 11 Mar 2026) used an intermediate count of 94,604,083 shares as of 17 Feb 2026 for its own percentage calculations; that older, slightly higher count is preserved unchanged in the two rows sourced to the proxy (Johnelle Hunt, officers/directors aggregate) rather than silently recomputed, and the resulting small percentage differences are called out in each row's own method_note.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- value_usd for Johnelle Hunt's stake and for the officers/directors aggregate: neither her Form 5 nor the proxy's Security Ownership of Management table discloses a dollar value, only share counts and (for the aggregate) a company-computed percentage; not estimated here to avoid presenting a modelled figure as filed.
- No sweep was performed of 13F filers below JPMorgan/T. Rowe Price in size (roughly the next ~740 of the 755 filers seen in the 31 Mar 2026 snapshot); a strategic or sovereign holder below that size crossing into relevance would not be visible through this method.
- Named individual directors and NEOs below Bryan Hunt (Biggs, Delco, Edwardson, Field, Gasaway, Hill, Hobbs, Kuhlow, Lisboa, Roberts, Robo, Simpson) were read from the 2026 proxy but not itemized as separate register rows since each holds well under 1% individually; only the 23-person aggregate is recorded.
- Market cap is a computed figure (live intraday price times the 30 Jun 2026 share count), not read directly off one page that states market cap; see the note on the roughly seven-week date mismatch.
- Whether Janus Henderson's firm-wide 13F-NT filings for Q2 2026 reflect a genuine full exit from JBHT specifically, versus a broader reorganisation of which entity within the group reports Section 13(f) securities, was not resolved beyond confirming every findable Janus Henderson filing entity reported no holdings this quarter.
