Address, industry classification, listing and incorporation come from W. W. Grainger, Inc.'s own SEC filer record, so the industry is the SEC's dry classification rather than a marketing label. The website comes from Wikidata. The headcount is the figure the Wikipedia article states for 2024, not a figure this site has verified against a filing. Description
W. W. Grainger, Inc. is an American Fortune 500 industrial supply company founded in 1927 in Chicago by the company's namesake William W. (Bill) Grainger. He founded the company to provide consumers with access to a consistent supply of motors. The company serves more than 4.5 million customers worldwide with offerings such as motors, lighting, material handling, fasteners, plumbing, tools, and safety supplies, along with inventory management services and technical support. Revenue is generally from business-to-business sales rather than retail sales.

Select a row or a slice for its provenance: the filing it came from, when it was measured, and the arithmetic behind it if it was modelled.
The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 1,249 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
1,249 managers reported a position, together holding 34.4m shares, or 72.9% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 47.2m shares outstanding at 30 Apr 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- MonotaRO is Grainger's most significant cross-holding: a majority (~50.66%) but NOT wholly owned stake in a separately Tokyo Stock Exchange-listed company (3064). It is fully consolidated in Grainger's financial statements as part of the Endless Assortment segment, which is why Grainger's own 10-K/10-Q never states an ownership percentage in prose: from Grainger's accounting perspective it is simply a consolidated subsidiary, but from an equity-graph perspective it is a genuine partly owned public company and the register/holdings distinction matters. The ~49.3% Grainger does not own is held by MonotaRO's own public shareholders (Japan Master Trust Bank, Japan Custody Bank, BNY Mellon, Citibank NY as nominee/trust holders, etc, per irbank.net), none of which are Grainger holdings.
- Grainger's FY2025 10-K independently corroborates the DIRECTION of the modelled MonotaRO share count: it describes Grainger as having 'a controlling ownership interest in MonotaRO,' with the remainder carried as noncontrolling interest on the consolidated balance sheet, consistent with a stake above 50% even though the filing supplies no percentage or share figure. This is a genuine primary-source reconciliation for the modelled estimate, not just an aggregator claim standing alone.
- Register self-gate: summing the 9 register rows (Vanguard family 5,640,502 + BlackRock 4,633,213 + State Street 2,008,993 + Geode 1,370,120 + Northern Trust 605,019 + T. Rowe Price 694,196 + FMR LLC 510,630 + Norges Bank 487,087 + Susan Slavik Williams 2,796,213) = 18,745,973 shares against 47,100,942 shares outstanding = 39.80%. No row is an aggregate with members in this file (Slavik Williams is an individual, not a 'directors and officers as a group' container), so no rolls_up_into/is_aggregate double-counting risk exists here.
- Vanguard: the parent CIK 0000102909 (Vanguard Group Inc) filed a 13F-NT (notice, no holdings) for the period ended 2026-06-30, confirming the Jan 2026 Vanguard reorganisation into multiple independently registered legal entities was already in effect for this quarter. I identified and summed ALL Vanguard-family entities that filed a 13F-HR (WITH holdings) for the same 2026-06-30 period and held any GWW shares: Vanguard Capital Management LLC (CIK 2100119, 2,881,429 sh), Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC (CIK 2100121, 2,306,592 sh), Vanguard Asset Management Ltd (CIK 1680208, 79,358 sh), Vanguard Fiduciary Trust Co (CIK 933478, 249,854 sh), Vanguard Global Advisers LLC (CIK 1811242, 93,478 sh), Vanguard Investments Australia Ltd (CIK 1550100, 20,891 sh), Vanguard National Trust Co (CIK 1984256, 10 sh), Vanguard Personalized Indexing Management LLC (CIK 1767306, 8,890 sh). I also checked Vanguard Advisers Inc, Vanguard Capital Wealth Advisors and Vanguard Marketing Corporation, none of which held GWW. Sum = 5,640,502 shares, $7,673,338,921, which is close to the pre-reorg 11.71% Vanguard held per the DEF 14A's 13G/A citation (5,627,263 shares, filed 29 Jul 2025), a reasonable check.
- BlackRock, Inc. similarly reorganised its 13F filing structure: the historic filer CIK 0001364742 (BlackRock, Inc., later renamed BlackRock Finance, Inc.) stopped filing 13F after Q2 2024, and a large set of BlackRock subsidiary CIKs (BlackRock Advisors LLC, BlackRock Investment Management LLC, BlackRock Fund Advisors, BlackRock Institutional Trust Company, BlackRock Japan, etc) filed 13F-NT (no holdings) for 2026-06-30. The consolidated position is now filed under a new CIK, 0002012383 ('BlackRock, Inc.', ticker BLK), which filed a 13F-HR with 20 lines summing to 4,633,213 shares of GWW; used as the single register row.
- Capital Group was checked across all three filing entities named in the research brief (Capital World Investors CIK 1422849, Capital International Investors CIK 1562230, Capital Research Global Investors CIK 1422848) for the 2026-06-30 13F-HR: none held any GWW shares, so no Capital Group row appears in this register.
- T. Rowe Price Associates Inc's 13F-HR info table (CIK 0000080255) reports its GWW position with a value column of $944,385, i.e. in THOUSANDS, per the known T. Rowe filing-family gotcha: 694,196 shares at $944,385 implies an unrealistic $1.36/share, while the implied per-share price from Vanguard/BlackRock/State Street 13F filings for the same period is consistently about $1,360.66/share (a factor of ~1000 off). value_usd for this row has been scaled to $944,385,000 accordingly. T. Rowe Price Investment Management, Inc. (CIK 0001897612) was also checked per the house rule and held zero GWW shares that period; the finding is recorded in the row's method_note rather than as its own zero-share register row, to avoid a duplicate-family-member row that would chart as a meaningless zero slice.
- Susan Slavik Williams (a Grainger family descendant; address given in the proxy as Newport Beach, CA) is the largest non-institutional holder per the DEF 14A 5%-owner table: 2,796,213 shares total beneficial ownership (2,785,700 sole voting/dispositive, 8,342 shared, plus 2,171 deferred stock units per a Form 4 filed 3 Dec 2025), stated as 5.9% of class in the proxy (based on the older share count implied by her underlying Schedule 13D/G filing date, not the current 47,100,942 shares outstanding; recomputed here against current shares outstanding it is 5.94%, consistent). This EXCLUDES 1,029,384 additional shares held in family trusts over which she has no voting or dispositive power, so the true aggregate Grainger-family block (her holding plus those excluded trust shares) is larger than what is captured in this single row; those excluded trust shares were not separately identified by name/trustee in the proxy text I read, so they are not represented as their own row here (see unknowns).
- value_usd for the register rows is shares x the 13F filing's own reported value where available (BlackRock, State Street, Geode, Northern Trust, T. Rowe Price after thousands-scaling, FMR, Norges Bank all state value directly in the info table); the Vanguard family row's value_usd is the direct sum of the eight successor entities' own reported values.
- GWW's 47,100,942 shares outstanding (10-Q cover page, as of 28 Jul 2026) is materially lower than the roughly 48-49 million shares implied by the older 5% owner filings cited in the March 2026 DEF 14A (Vanguard's 13G/A filed Jul 2025, BlackRock's 13G/A filed Jan 2024), consistent with Grainger's ongoing share buyback program (the 10-Q shows treasury stock rising to 62,558,699 shares at 30 Jun 2026 vs 62,240,438 at 31 Dec 2025).
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- Exact share count of Grainger's MonotaRO stake as filed by either party. Neither Grainger's 10-K nor 10-Q states an explicit ownership percentage or share count for MonotaRO in prose (searched extensively; the 10-K's only relevant language is 'a controlling ownership interest in MonotaRO', no figure). The 50.66% figure and 'GRAINGER GLOBAL HOLDINGS, INC.' holder name come from irbank.net, an aggregator of MonotaRO's own Japanese major-shareholder disclosure, not a document I read directly at the source (MonotaRO's EDINET yuho or a Grainger SC 13D/G on MonotaRO, which is a foreign private issuer and not required to have a US 13D/G). I could not locate or fetch a primary EDINET filing in the time available, so the holdings row's share count and value are recorded as modelled/estimated (basis 'modelled', confidence 'estimated', with low_shares/high_shares) rather than filed.
- The identity and exact share count of the 1,029,384 shares held in family trusts that the DEF 14A explicitly excludes from Susan Slavik Williams' 2,796,213-share beneficial ownership figure. These are almost certainly additional Grainger-family-controlled shares (D.W. Grainger family trusts), which the research brief specifically flagged as worth checking, but the proxy text I searched did not name the trustee(s) or provide a separate beneficial-ownership line for them, so no separate register row could be sourced for this block.
- Whether any other Grainger-family individuals or trusts (beyond Susan Slavik Williams) independently cross the 5% disclosure threshold; the DEF 14A's 'more than 5%' table lists only Vanguard, BlackRock and Slavik Williams, so if other family holders exist they are each below 5% individually and were not itemized.
- BlackRock's exact 20-line-item breakdown by share class/account was not fully enumerated (only 8 of 20 lines were printed by the summing tool); this does not affect the summed total but is noted for completeness.
- A precise close-of-business JPY/USD FX rate specific to 17 Jun 2026 (the irbank.net as-of date for the 50.66% figure) was not sourced; the FX rate and MonotaRO share price used are both dated 17 Aug 2026 (today's data), introducing roughly two months of potential price/FX drift into the MonotaRO value_usd estimate. This is flagged via basis 'aggregator' and confidence 'reported' rather than 'filed'.
