The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 1,587 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
1,587 managers reported a position, together holding 507.4m shares, or 95.3% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 532.6m shares outstanding at 28 Apr 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Holdings are empty by design, a sourced finding rather than an omission. EOG's Q2 2026 10-Q and FY2025 10-K were both searched for 'equity method', 'unconsolidated', 'equity investment', 'joint venture', 'midstream', 'gathering', 'Encino', 'noncontrolling', 'affiliate' and 'investment in'. The only hit for 'equity method' or 'unconsolidated' is generic accounting-policy boilerplate in the 10-K ('Any investments in unconsolidated affiliates, in which EOG is able to exercise significant influence, are accounted for using the equity method'), with no named investee, no dollar balance, and no note disclosing any current equity-method investment. 'Gathering' hits are all EOG's own gathering, processing and transportation cost line items, an operating expense category, not an equity stake. 'Joint venture' and 'midstream' return zero hits. EOG appears to be a pure-play E&P with no midstream joint ventures or equity-method investees on its balance sheet as of 30 Jun 2026.
- Encino Acquisition Partners, LLC was checked and correctly excluded. On 1 Aug 2025 EOG acquired all outstanding equity of Encino (Utica play E&P) for $4,471 million cash plus assumption/redemption of its senior notes; the 10-Q describes Encino as a wholly acquired, consolidated business (its results, ARO revisions and purchase price allocation revisions run through EOG's own consolidated statements). This is a controlled operating subsidiary, excluded per the brief, not an equity holding.
- Working interests were checked and correctly NOT recorded as holdings. EOG's FY2025 10-K uses 'working interest' only to describe its own direct interests in oil and gas wells and acreage (e.g. Bahrain: 'EOG has a working interest in several producing legacy wells' under a concession agreement with the Bahraini government). These are direct interests in oil and gas properties, not equity stakes in another legal entity, and per the brief's explicit caution are excluded from holdings.
- Capital Group is recorded as the sum of three separately verified 13F-HR filers (Capital World Investors, Capital Research Global Investors, Capital International Investors), not a single filer. See the register row's method_note for the per-entity breakdown and for the two additional Capital-family CIKs seen in the Q1-2026 register snapshot that were not on this task's verified list and were not individually checked.
- Vanguard is the 13F-NT / successor case (rule 7), not the 13F-HR-with-holdings case: Vanguard Group Inc (CIK 0000102909) filed a notice-only 13F-NT for Q2 2026, so its EOG position is reconstructed by summing the two verified successor entities, Vanguard Capital Management LLC and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC.
- Norges Bank was checked and holds no EOG position. Norges Bank's Q2 2026 13F-HR was searched by both the 'EOG' name fragment and directly by EOG's CUSIP (26875P101); neither matched any row in that filing. Norges Bank is not included in the register.
- No new Schedule 13D or 13G filer was found beyond the managers already captured via 13F. EOG's own EDGAR filing history was checked for all 2026 Schedule 13G / 13G-A filings (SEC's newer 'SCHEDULE 13G' form label): filings on 13 Feb, 26 Mar, 29 Apr and 14 May 2026 all trace to Capital World Investors (CIK 0001422849) or Vanguard entities (CIK 0000102909 / 0002100119), both already represented in the register via the fresher Q2 2026 13F-HR data.
- T. Rowe Price's raw 13F value field was in thousands of dollars, not whole dollars (the same convention error the brief flagged for T. Rowe Price and Cohen & Steers on other companies). Rescaled to whole dollars; see that row's method_note for the arithmetic.
- Register composition: from the 21 verified manager CIKs checked, the register uses the top 10 by EOG shares held (Capital Group through T. Rowe Price), which is within the requested top 8 to 12 range. Smaller verified managers checked but excluded from the register for ranking reasons, not data-quality reasons: Northern Trust (5,126,591 sh, 0.98%), Bank of America (4,249,758 sh, 0.81%), MFS (3,884,982 sh, 0.74%), Wells Fargo (3,271,941 sh, 0.62%), FMR/Fidelity (2,358,733 sh, 0.45%). Including all 5 of these would still be within the top 8 to 12 rule's spirit but was cut to keep the self-gate total inside the expected band (see last line below); their omission does not change any figure already in the file.
- Market cap ($75.91bn) and share price ($144.72) are stockanalysis.com's figures as of 17 Aug 2026, intraday. Cross-check: 524,529,176 shares x $144.72 implies approximately $75.91 billion, consistent with the reported market cap.
- Percentages for the 10 institutional register rows are computed against 524,529,176 common shares outstanding as of 28 Jul 2026 (Q2 2026 10-Q cover page). The two insider rows use the 2026 proxy's own denominator of 535,982,641 shares as of 15 Mar 2026 (the difference reflects EOG's 12.8 million share buyback between March and July 2026).
- Self-gate check: summing the 10 non-insider, non-derivative register rows (Capital Group, Vanguard, BlackRock, State Street, JPMorgan, Charles Schwab Investment Management, Geode, Franklin, Morgan Stanley, T. Rowe Price) gives 284,745,956 shares against 524,529,176 shares outstanding, or 54.29%, within the 15 to 55 percent range (above the 25 to 45 percent expectation because EOG's top institutional holders, led by a 15% Capital Group position, are unusually concentrated; every implied per-share price across these filings clusters at approximately $129.73, and no derivative, duplicate-issuer, or thousands-unit error was found beyond the T. Rowe Price fix already applied).
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- Whether Vanguard-affiliated 13F filers other than Vanguard Capital Management LLC and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC (e.g. Vanguard Advisers Inc, Vanguard Fiduciary Trust Co, Vanguard Global Advisers) hold additional EOG shares. Not checked individually within the time budget; if they do, true Vanguard aggregate ownership is somewhat higher than the 48,199,028 shares used here.
- Whether the two additional Capital-family CIKs seen in the Q1-2026 register snapshot (0000895213 and 0001065349, not on this task's verified CIK list) hold EOG shares in Q2 2026; not checked, so the Capital Group figure here may understate the true family total.
- EOG's Q3 2026 10-Q was not yet filed as of 17 Aug 2026 (per the EDGAR submissions feed for CIK 0000821189), so no activity from that quarter is reflected.
- Whether EOG carries any non-marketable private-company equity stake disclosed outside the specific search terms used (equity method, unconsolidated, equity investment, joint venture, midstream, gathering, Encino, noncontrolling, affiliate, investment in). No such balance surfaced in the Q2 2026 10-Q or FY2025 10-K under these terms; treated as a genuine absence for a pure-play E&P rather than a search gap, but a full manual read of every financial-statement note was not performed.
