The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 1,125 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
1,125 managers reported a position, together holding 241.3m shares, or 85.1% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 283.6m shares outstanding at 16 Apr 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- SEPARATELY LISTED MAJORITY-OWNED SUBSIDIARY: Forestar Group Inc. (NYSE and NYSE Texas: FOR) is a majority-controlled, separately listed residential lot development company with real public minority shareholders (about 38% of Forestar's outstanding shares as of both 30 Sep 2025 and 30 Jun 2026, per D.R. Horton's own 10-K and 10-Q). D.R. Horton consolidates 100% of Forestar in its financial statements (the 38% it does not own is booked as noncontrolling interests), but consolidation is not the same as wholly owned: this is recorded as a HOLDING, following the Moody's/ICRA, Nucor and Diamondback/Viper precedent. The instrument is Forestar's single class of Common Stock, the same instrument that trades as FOR (unlike Diamondback's Viper stake, there is no separate unlisted share class here). D.R. Horton's holding (31,451,063 shares, last confirmed via a 1 Nov 2024 Schedule 13D/A) is 61.65% of Forestar's own 51,017,627 shares outstanding (per Forestar's 10-Q cover page as of 17 Jul 2026), which both companies' own filings round to 'approximately 62%'.
- LAND, LOTS AND OPTION CONTRACTS EXCLUDED: D.R. Horton's homebuilding segment controls land through both owned lot inventory and land purchase (option) contracts with land developers and land bankers, including a strategic relationship with Ryan Horton and Reagan Horton's land-banking entities ('R&R'). These land purchase contracts can create unconsolidated variable interest entities (deposits of $2.1 billion at 30 Sep 2025 per the FY2025 10-K), but they are direct interests in physical land parcels and contractual land-purchase rights, not equity stakes in operating companies, and are correctly excluded from holdings entirely. This is the obvious way to get a homebuilder wrong and none of it appears in holdings here.
- NO OTHER EQUITY-METHOD OR UNCONSOLIDATED INVESTMENTS FOUND: the FY2025 10-K and the Q3 FY2026 10-Q were both searched for 'equity method', 'unconsolidated', 'joint venture', 'investments in' and 'noncontrolling interest'. Beyond Forestar (majority-owned, consolidated, and recorded as a holding above) and the land-purchase-contract VIEs (excluded, see above), no named equity-method investee, joint venture, or non-marketable equity security was found in either filing.
- FISCAL PERIODS USED: D.R. Horton's fiscal year ends 30 Sep. The latest 10-K is for FY2025 (period ended 30 Sep 2025, filed 19 Nov 2025). The latest 10-Q is for the third quarter of FY2026 (period ended 30 Jun 2026, filed 23 Jul 2026), which is the most recent 10-Q available as of this research (18 Aug 2026); no FY2026 10-K (which would cover the year ended 30 Sep 2026) has been filed yet. company.shares_outstanding (279,701,267) is taken from that 10-Q's cover page, 'As of July 16, 2026', per the brief's instruction to use the latest 10-Q cover page as the single denominator throughout this file (distinct from the 280,730,194 shares outstanding shown on the same 10-Q's balance sheet as of the 30 Jun 2026 period end, and from the 291,099,538 shares outstanding the Dec 2025 proxy states as of its own 1 Dec 2025 record date). No stock split was found in either filing.
- PROXY USED: DHI's 2026 DEF 14A (filed 10 Dec 2025) is the most recent proxy; the next annual meeting proxy would be filed around Dec 2026 and had not yet been filed as of this research.
- FOUNDER: D.R. Horton was founded by Donald R. Horton, who served as Chairman until his death; per the 2026 proxy, his adult sons Ryan Horton and Reagan Horton (through the Horton Family Limited Partnership and Horton Family Limited Partnership II) remain 5-percent-plus beneficial owners and related parties (as land bankers, 'R&R') but are NOT current directors or executive officers. Their combined stake (Horton Family LP and Affiliates 20,106,289 + Ryan Horton sole 4,619,343 + Reagan Horton sole 4,587,376 = 29,312,958 shares, 10.48% of the company on this file's denominator) sits entirely OUTSIDE the officers-and-directors aggregate, the Walmart-style pattern the brief calls out, and materially exceeds the officers/directors group's own 1,926,225 shares (0.69%).
- PROXY VS FRESH 13F RECONCILIATION: the DHI proxy's 'Certain Other Beneficial Owners' table (based on 13G/13D filings, some over a year stale) listed The Vanguard Group at 34,856,397 shares (11.97%, 13G/A filed 10 Apr 2024), Capital World Investors alone at 30,441,897 shares (10.46%, 13G undated in the excerpt), and BlackRock at 28,422,236 shares (9.76%, 13G/A filed 17 Apr 2025). Fresh Q2 2026 13F-HR filings (period 30 Jun 2026) were used instead per the brief: Vanguard family (7 entities summed) 32,074,444 shares, Capital Group family (3 entities checked, 2 holding) 42,967,394 shares, BlackRock 24,974,471 shares. BlackRock's fresh figure is about 3.4 million shares LOWER than its stale proxy figure; Vanguard's is about 2.8 million shares lower; Capital Group's rose because the proxy figure omitted Capital Research Global Investors entirely. This is exactly the two-directions warning in the brief: the error does not run one way.
- SELF-GATE: 10 register rows, 150,949,914 shares summed, 53.97% of the 279,701,267 shares outstanding denominator (computed with the chart's own arithmetic: the officers-and-directors row is is_aggregate but has no member rows with rolls_up_into pointing to it in this file, so it counts at its full stated value like every other row; no row in this file carries rolls_up_into). This is above the brief's usual ~55% ceiling by a hair, driven by the combination of a large founder-family concentration (Horton Family LP and Affiliates plus Ryan and Reagan Horton's individual sole holdings, 10.48% combined) sitting on top of unusually large institutional 13F positions (Capital Group family alone is 15.36%, the single largest holder). Verified this is genuine concentration rather than double counting: the founder-family rows are deliberately non-overlapping (each son's row uses only his SOLE holdings, explicitly excluding the shared pool that duplicates the Horton Family LP row, per the method_note on each), and the institutional rows are independent 13F filers with no known overlapping ownership.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- Whether D.R. Horton's exact Forestar share count (31,451,063, last confirmed by a Schedule 13D/A filed 1 Nov 2024) has changed since Oct 2024: no more recent Schedule 13D/A or Section 16 filing by D.R. Horton on Forestar was found, and Forestar's own 10-Q/10-K text only ever gives a rounded percentage ('approximately 62%'), never a refreshed exact share count, so the arithmetic consistency check (61.65% vs the filed 'approximately 62%') is the best available corroboration rather than a direct confirmation.
- Whether Vanguard, State Street, Geode Capital or T. Rowe Price have filed a Schedule 13G or 13G/A on DHI that would appear in a future proxy's 5-percent table: DHI's Dec 2025 proxy's 'Certain Other Beneficial Owners' table lists only The Vanguard Group, Capital World Investors, BlackRock, Horton Family Limited Partnership and Affiliates, Donald Ryan Horton and Douglas Reagan Horton; State Street, Geode Capital and T. Rowe Price were added to this register purely from their own fresh Q2 2026 13F-HR filings, and no separate 13G search was performed for them within the time budget.
- Rows beyond the 10 verified holders here (for example any additional mid-size institutional holders below Geode Capital and T. Rowe Price in size) were not individually re-verified against their own Q2 2026 13F filings within the time budget and are omitted rather than included on a stale or unverified basis.
- The precise date D.R. Horton's Forestar ownership percentage declined from 75% (Oct 2017 merger close) to approximately 62% (current), and the exact mechanism (Forestar equity issuances versus any D.R. Horton share sales) beyond the general dilution explanation in acquired_how, was not investigated in detail; only the two endpoint percentages were sourced.
