Address, industry classification, listing and incorporation come from Dollar General Corporation's own SEC filer record, so the industry is the SEC's dry classification rather than a marketing label. Description
Dollar General Corporation is an American chain of discount stores headquartered in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. As of January 8, 2024, Dollar General operated 20,388 stores in the contiguous United States and Mexico. The company began in 1939 in Scottsville, Kentucky, as a family-owned business called J.L. Turner and Son, owned by James Luther Turner and Cal Turner. In 1955, the name changed to Dollar General Corporation; in 1968 the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange. The Fortune 500 recognized Dollar General in 1999, and in 2020 it reached No. 112 on the list.

The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 1,133 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
1,133 managers reported a position, together holding 215.8m shares, or 97.8% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 220.6m shares outstanding at 29 May 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Holdings are empty by design, a sourced finding rather than a gap. The latest 10-K (fiscal year ended 30 Jan 2026, filed 20 Mar 2026, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/29534/000110465926032325/dg-20260130x10k.htm) and the latest 10-Q (13-week quarter ended 1 May 2026, filed 2 Jun 2026, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/29534/000110465926069205/dg-20260501x10q.htm) were both searched via scripts/filing.py search for the terms 'equity method', 'joint venture', 'unconsolidated', 'non-marketable', 'nonmarketable', 'strategic investment', 'noncontrolling interest', 'equity investment', 'minority interest' and 'investment in'. Every term returned zero substantive hits in both filings (the sole 'investment in' hit in the 10-K was boilerplate risk-factor language, 'Investment in our Company involves risks'). Dollar General is a single-segment discount retailer operating its own Dollar General and pOpshelf-banner stores and distribution network; it reports no equity-method investees, joint ventures, unconsolidated affiliates, non-marketable equity securities, or noncontrolling interests in either filing.
- Fiscal year and filing dates. Dollar General's fiscal year ends on the Friday closest to 31 January, not a calendar year end. The latest 10-K covers fiscal year 2025, the 52-week period ended 30 Jan 2026 (filed 20 Mar 2026). The latest 10-Q covers the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, the 13-week period ended 1 May 2026 (filed 2 Jun 2026). Both were identified by filing date order in the EDGAR submissions feed (checked through 7 Aug 2026) rather than assumed from a December year end; no fiscal Q2 2026 10-Q had been filed as of 18 Aug 2026.
- Share count did NOT fall as the brief's lead expected; it rose slightly. The XBRL dei:EntityCommonStockSharesOutstanding history for CIK 0000029534 from Aug 2024 through May 2026 shows a smooth, small increase from 219,915,184 (22 Aug 2024) to 220,586,647 (29 May 2026), about +0.3%, consistent with share-based compensation issuance running ahead of a reduced buyback pace during Dollar General's operational turnaround, not the buyback-driven decline seen on comparable off-price/discount retailers. No stock split was found: 'stock split', 'split-adjusted', 'forward split' and 'reverse split' returned zero hits in both the 10-K and 10-Q, and the share count history shows no discontinuous jump. company.shares_outstanding (220,586,647, as of 29 May 2026, from the 10-Q cover page: 'The Registrant had 220,586,647 shares of common stock outstanding on May 29, 2026') is used as the single denominator throughout.
- No remaining private-equity or strategic holder found, checked from the most recent filings rather than assumed absent. Dollar General was taken private in a 2007 leveraged buyout (KKR, Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, CPP Investment Board) and re-IPO'd in Nov 2009. The 2026 proxy's 5%-holder table (record date 19 Mar 2026) lists exactly three holders, all index managers: The Vanguard Group (25,071,171 shares, 11.4%, based on a stale Schedule 13G/A Amendment No. 11 filed 13 Feb 2024), BlackRock, Inc. (15,235,517 shares, 6.9%, Schedule 13G/A Amendment No. 10 filed 17 Apr 2025) and State Street Corporation (11,017,790 shares, 5.0%, Schedule 13G filed 9 Feb 2026). No KKR, Goldman Sachs, CPP or other PE/strategic entity appears. Separately, the full EDGAR filing history for CIK 0000029534 (2014 to 7 Aug 2026, 1,003 filings) contains zero Schedule 13D or 13D/A filings of any kind, only 13G and 13G/A, meaning no holder has ever disclosed an activist or control-seeking (non-passive) stake in that window. Every SCHEDULE 13G/13G/A filed against Dollar General since 1 Jan 2025 was individually identified and its filer resolved by CIK: State Street Corp (twice, Feb 2026 and Aug 2026), Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC, Vanguard Capital Management LLC, Vanguard Group Inc (the realignment 13G/A), Pzena Investment Management LLC (twice), BlackRock Capital Markets LLC and Capital International Investors, none of them a PE sponsor.
- Vanguard case: PARENT FILED 13F-NT and its own Schedule 13G/A confirms 0 shares, so this is the PNC pattern (sum the successors), not the default substitute-one-row pattern. Seven Vanguard-family entities were found to hold Dollar General as of 30 Jun 2026 (see the Vanguard register row's method_note for the full list and figures); four more were checked and hold zero. This exceeds the two-successor case seen on the sibling reference file and the five-successor case flagged as unusual in the chunk prompt.
- Capital Group family checked and found to hold zero DG. All three mandated Capital Group entities were checked against CUSIP 256677105 in their Q2 2026 13F-HR info tables: Capital World Investors (CIK 0001422849), Capital International Investors (CIK 0001562230) and Capital Research Global Investors (CIK 0001422848). None of the three contains the CUSIP anywhere in its info table as of 30 Jun 2026 (despite Capital International Investors having separately filed a Schedule 13G/A against Dollar General as recently as 14 Feb 2025, its Q2 2026 13F position is zero, meaning that stake was exited or fell under 13F thresholds between those dates). This is a sourced zero, not an omission.
- T. Rowe Price: both mandated entities checked. T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc. (CIK 0000080255) holds 435,687 shares as of 30 Jun 2026 (values-in-thousands trap corrected, see the register row's method_note). T. Rowe Price Investment Management, Inc. (CIK 0001897612), the separate registrant, filed its own Q2 2026 13F-HR and holds zero Dollar General shares; its info table instead shows a Dollar Tree Inc position (different CUSIP), confirming the absence is real rather than a search-term miss.
- Proxy 5% holders are stale relative to the Q2 2026 13F data used in the register, in different directions per holder. The 2026 DEF 14A's Vanguard figure (25,071,171 shares, 11.4%) traces to a Schedule 13G/A filed 13 Feb 2024, over two years before the record date, and predates the Jan 2026 Vanguard realignment entirely; the register instead sums the current 30 Jun 2026 13F-HR family total (28,292,327 shares). The proxy's BlackRock figure (15,235,517, 6.9%, from an Apr 2025 13G/A) and State Street figure (11,017,790, 5.0%, from a Feb 2026 13G) are closer in time to the 13F data used here (22,967,085 and 10,721,256 respectively) but still differ, since 13G filings are point-in-time snapshots on their own filing schedule while the 13F-HR figures used in the register are all measured as of the single date 30 Jun 2026.
- Dollar General has a single class of common stock; no dual-class or founder-control structure exists. The insider register is small and fully diffuse: the largest individually disclosed insider holder is CEO Todd J. Vasos at 358,265 shares (0.16%), and the full 18-person officers-and-directors group holds only 1,345,359 shares (0.61%) in total, consistent with a company 17 years past its 2009 re-IPO with no remaining founder or sponsor stake.
- Self-gate, computed the way the chart computes it: 9 register rows. The only row with rolls_up_into set is Todd J. Vasos (358,265 shares), rolling into 'All current directors and executive officers as a group (18 persons)' (reported 1,345,359), which is reduced to a residual of 987,094. Every other row (Vanguard, BlackRock, State Street, Geode, Norges Bank, FMR, T. Rowe Price, and the Vasos member row) counts at full value. Total = 28,292,327 + 22,967,085 + 10,721,256 + 5,933,054 + 1,541,181 + 489,464 + 435,687 + 358,265 + 987,094 = 71,725,413 shares, or 32.5158% of 220,586,647 shares outstanding, within the expected 25 to 45 percent band.
- Market cap ($27.09bn) and share price ($122.80) are stockanalysis.com's figures as of the 18 Aug 2026 market data pull. Cross-check: 220,586,647 shares (10-Q cover count) x $122.80 implies approximately $27.09 billion, matching the reported market cap, and independently the implied 30 Jun 2026 price from three different 13F filers' dollar/share ratios (BlackRock, State Street, Vanguard Capital Management) clusters tightly at about $115.1, a plausible level below the 18 Aug 2026 price of $122.80.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- Dollar values for the two proxy-sourced insider rows (Vasos and the 18-person group) are null: the 2026 proxy's beneficial ownership table gives share counts and percentages but no dollar values, and no verified per-share price as of the 19 Mar 2026 record date was sourced, so a value was not estimated rather than guessed.
- The 15 other individually named directors and named executive officers in the proxy table (Bryant, Calbert, Chadwick, Hicks, McGuire, Rowland, Sandler, Santana, Scarlett, Lau, Dilts, E. Taylor, R. Taylor, Wenkoff, Deckard) and the 2 further unnamed persons in the 18-person group were not broken out as individual register rows since none individually exceeds 0.1% of the company; their figures are recorded in the aggregate row's method_note instead.
- Institutional holders below the top 8 (for example JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Northern Trust, Wellington, Dodge and Cox, Pzena Investment Management despite its two 13G/A filings on Dollar General) were not individually checked via 13F; the register's 9 rows already satisfy the brief's top 8 to 12 target while covering all mandated family checks (Vanguard, Capital Group, both T. Rowe Price entities, plus a sovereign holder).
