Address, industry classification, listing and incorporation come from Centene Corporation's own SEC filer record, so the industry is the SEC's dry classification rather than a marketing label. The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 850 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
850 managers reported a position, together holding 472.4m shares, or 95.7% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 493.8m shares outstanding at 24 Apr 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Holdings side is genuinely empty. Searched the FY2025 10-K (filed 17 Feb 2026, accession 0001071739-26-000049, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1071739/000107173926000049/cnc-20251231.htm) and the Q2 2026 10-Q (filed 28 Jul 2026, accession 0001071739-26-000153, the freshest filing on file since it postdates the 10-K, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1071739/000107173926000153/cnc-20260630.htm) with scripts/filing.py search/prose for: 'joint venture', 'equity method', 'noncontrolling interest', 'minority interest', 'unconsolidated', 'variable interest entit', 'non-marketable', 'ownership interest', 'majority interest', 'majority-owned', 'controlling interest', 'readily determinable', 'cost method', 'strategic investment'. No individually named, sized equity-method investee and no named partly owned consolidated subsidiary with a disclosed ownership percentage were found anywhere in either filing.
- Exhibit 21.1 to the FY2025 10-K (https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1071739/000107173926000049/a2025123110-kexhibit21.htm) was checked per the project's Exhibit 21 technique. It is a bare alphabetical list of subsidiary names and states of incorporation with NO ownership-percentage column (same shape as Labcorp's and Darden's Exhibit 21, unlike Expeditors' or PPG's), so it could not be used to size any partly owned entity. One line item, 'Investments in subsidiaries and joint ventures (outside basis)' ($68m deferred tax liability), appears once in the FY2025 10-K's deferred-tax reconciliation table with no entity name or ownership percentage attached, so it cannot be turned into a row.
- The balance sheet carries Redeemable noncontrolling interests ($23m at 30 Jun 2026 and 31 Dec 2025) and Nonredeemable noncontrolling interest ($72m at 30 Jun 2026, $80m at 31 Dec 2025). These are minority stakes that OTHER parties hold in subsidiaries Centene itself consolidates, i.e. they size what Centene does NOT own, not a Centene equity stake, so they were deliberately NOT applied to Centene's own position (matching the Steel Dynamics/CF Industries/FirstEnergy/NiSource precedent). No named entity or ownership percentage is disclosed anywhere in the 10-K or 10-Q that these balances attach to, so even the minority side could not be turned into a sized, attributable row.
- Circle Health Group (UK private hospitals) and Collaborative Health Systems (CHS) were wholly owned operating subsidiaries that Centene fully divested (Circle Health closed January 2024 for $931 million, per the FY2025 10-K MD&A). Both were 100% owned before sale, so under the brief's rule a wholly owned acquisition/divestiture is not a holding; no row or exited-stake note is warranted beyond this record of having checked.
- Centene's long-term investment portfolio (municipal, corporate and U.S. Treasury securities, government-sponsored obligations, equity securities and private equity funds, described in the FY2025 10-K's Investments note) is the treasury/investment-portfolio holding explicitly excluded by the research brief and was not itemized.
- Register: 12 rows, self-gate computed from this final file exactly as the chart computes it (no rolls_up_into/is_aggregate rows exist here, so total = sum of raw shares): 225,423,170 shares against shares_outstanding 493,995,000 = 45.63%. Within the acceptable band (roughly 25-45%, under the 55% hard cap).
- shares_outstanding 493,995,000 is the Q2 2026 10-Q cover-page figure, 'As of July 24, 2026, the registrant had 493,995 thousand shares of common stock outstanding' (https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1071739/000107173926000153/cnc-20260630.htm). The 30 Jun 2026 balance-sheet outstanding count in the same 10-Q is 493,987,000, essentially identical; the cover-page figure and date were used as the freshest denominator. Centene has repurchased a large fraction of its issued stock: 625,693,000 issued vs 493,987,000 outstanding at 30 Jun 2026 (131,706,000 in treasury).
- Vanguard family sweep: enumerated candidate entities from this project's own 31-Mar-2026 register snapshot (data/registers/CNC.json, 7 CIKs) plus an EDGAR company-name search for 'vanguard' 13F-HR filers (5 further CIKs: Vanguard Advisers Inc 0000947529, Vanguard Capital Wealth Advisors 0001730578, Vanguard Marketing Corporation 0000217448, Vanguard National Trust Co 0001984256, and Vanguard V Venture Partners LLC 0001105567, an unrelated VC firm excluded as a name collision). All 11 relevant CIKs' own Q2 2026 13F-HR information tables were fetched and checked for CENTENE/CUSIP 15135B101: 7 held (summed into the Vanguard row above), 4 held zero (Advisers, Capital Wealth Advisors, Marketing Corp, National Trust). The parent, The Vanguard Group, Inc. (CIK 0000102909), filed Form 13F-NT (a notice carrying no holdings) for the quarter ended 30 Jun 2026, confirming reporting is pushed down entirely to the successor entities, so summing the successors is the family total per the PNC precedent (not the default 'substitute one' rule).
- T. Rowe Price sweep: both registrants checked. T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc. (CIK 0000080255) holds 8,701,030 shares across 2 lines; T. Rowe Price Investment Management, Inc. (CIK 0001897612) holds zero (CUSIP 15135B101 and the string CENTENE do not appear anywhere in its Q2 2026 information table). T. Rowe Price Associates files VALUES IN THOUSANDS: the raw infoTable value was $558,521 against 8,701,030 shares (implying $0.064/share), corrected to $558,521,000 by checking the implied price against Vanguard's contemporaneous $64.19/share.
- Capital Group sweep: three registrants checked. Capital World Investors (CIK 0001422849) holds 1,339,279 shares; Capital International Investors (CIK 0001562230) and Capital Research Global Investors (CIK 0001422848) both hold zero (no CENTENE/CUSIP match in either Q2 2026 information table).
- The DEF 14A proxy (filed 26 Mar 2026, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1071739/000107173926000077/cnc-20260326.htm) 'Five Percent Beneficial Owners' table, dated as of 13 Mar 2026 and built on stale 13G/13D filings, shows Vanguard 61,190,588 (12.4%), BlackRock, Inc. 38,215,413 (7.8%) and AQR Capital Management, LLC/AQR Capital Management Holdings, LLC 31,798,738 (6.5%). These differ from the fresh Q2 2026 13F figures used above (Vanguard higher pre-refresh, BlackRock and AQR both higher pre-refresh, i.e. the correction runs both directions here, mostly down for all three since the proxy count is larger in every case). The fresh 13F figures were preferred per the brief.
- The same DEF 14A shows 'All directors and executive officers as a group (14 persons)' holding 1,823,921 shares of Total Beneficial Ownership, under 1% (marked with an asterisk, denominator 491,772,493 shares outstanding as of 13 Mar 2026). No individual officer or director crosses 1%, individually or in aggregate; Centene has no founder, family or dual-class voting structure, so no insider row was added.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- No named, individually sized equity-method investee, joint venture, or partly owned consolidated subsidiary could be found in the FY2025 10-K, the Q2 2026 10-Q, or Exhibit 21.1 to the FY2025 10-K; see notes for the exact search terms and documents checked.
- The entity(ies) behind the $23m redeemable and $72m nonredeemable noncontrolling-interest balances at 30 Jun 2026 are not named anywhere in the 10-K or 10-Q, so neither Centene's percentage stake in, nor the identity of, any such consolidated-but-not-wholly-owned subsidiary could be determined.
