The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 739 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
739 managers reported a position, together holding 125.6m shares, or 98.3% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of the 127.8m shares outstanding at 1 May 2026, the count in force when this quarter was measured rather than the count today.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Holdings side: searched the most recent 10-K (fiscal year ended 31 Dec 2025, filed 20 Feb 2026) and the most recent 10-Q (period 30 Jun 2026, filed 5 Aug 2026, the newest filing available as of the 19 Aug 2026 research date) for 'equity method', 'equity investment', 'non-marketable', 'joint venture', 'unconsolidated', 'minority interest', 'privately held', 'investment in', 'affiliate'. None of these terms produced a hit describing a minority equity stake in another company; every 'joint venture' and 'strategic investment' hit was generic risk-factor boilerplate about possible future M&A activity, and the only 'unconsolidated' hit was boilerplate guarantor-subsidiary language in the debt-summarized-financial-information note. The balance sheet carries no equity-method investment line; the only investment-labeled asset is 'Short-term investments' ($214.2m at 31 Dec 2024, $0 at 31 Dec 2025), which is treasury/money-market in character and excluded by the brief. Exhibit 21.1 of the FY2025 10-K was read directly: it is a bare 8-name list of CDW's own wholly owned subsidiaries (CDW LLC, CDW Technologies LLC, CDW Direct LLC, CDW Government LLC, CDW Logistics LLC, CDW International Holdings Limited, SCS Holdings I LLC, Sirius Computer Solutions LLC, the last two being the wholly owned Sirius acquisition), no ownership-percentage column, no joint-venture entities. Conclusion: as a large-cap technology reseller and solutions integrator that grows by acquiring businesses outright rather than taking minority stakes, CDW holds no equity-method, cost-method, joint-venture, or other minority equity stake in any other company as of the most recent available filings; holdings is legitimately empty, matching the pattern the brief predicted for a company of this type.
- Former private-equity sponsors: CDW was taken private by Madison Dearborn Partners and Providence Equity Partners in 2007 and re-listed via IPO in 2013. Both sponsors are ABSENT from the current (2026) DEF 14A's Principal Stockholders table and from every Section 13 filing since early 2016: the last Schedule 13G/A filed by either sponsor entity was in February 2016 (Amendment No. 2, event date 31 Dec 2015), when Providence Equity Partners VI L.P. held 4,605,925 shares (2.7%) and Madison Dearborn Capital Partners V-A, L.P. held 5,367,091 shares (3.2%), both already below the 5% reporting threshold at that point (calculated against a 169,274,454-share base, itself down from CDW's original post-IPO share count as buybacks had already begun). No SC 13D was ever filed against CDW (checked EDGAR's full Schedule 13 filing history for CIK 0001402057, both the recent submissions file and the pre-2018 archive), and neither sponsor entity appears in the current proxy, current 10-K, or any 13F. Recorded here as a note with NO row, per the brief: a sponsor that has fully exited is not a null-shares row, since null would misrepresent a completed exit as a current, unsized holding.
- Capital Group family: six active Capital Group entities were checked directly against their own Q2 2026 (30 Jun 2026) 13F-HR filings and NONE holds CDW: Capital World Investors 0001422849, Capital International Investors 0001562230, Capital Research Global Investors 0001422848, Capital International, Inc./CA/ 0000895213, Capital Group Investment Management Pte. Ltd. 0001939970, Capital Group Private Client Services, Inc. 0001857666. Two further registrants, Capital Group Companies, Inc. 0000732812 and Capital Group International, Inc. 0000949308, filed Form 13F-NT (notice, no holdings) for Q2 2026. This is consistent with Capital Group's absence from data/registers/CDW.json's top-40 snapshot (31 Mar 2026), which in this case appears to be a genuine negative rather than an incomplete register: no row is recorded, per the convention that a holder checked and found at zero is a note, not a null row.
- Self-gate computed from this final file: 11 register rows (10 institutional 13F rows plus the officers/directors proxy aggregate, which has no separately broken-out members and so counts at its own full value per the chart's own arithmetic), 67,117,155 total shares, against shares_outstanding 125,017,426 = 53.69% of the company. This is above the brief's roughly 25-45% typical band and close to, but under, its 55% hard-flag threshold. Checked for the usual causes and found none: every institutional row is CUSIP 12514G108 common stock at the same 30 Jun 2026 date (no LP/partnership units, no pre-split counts, CDW has had no stock split), no holder appears twice (Vanguard is one family row summed from 8 successor 13F-HR filings behind a confirmed 13F-NT parent; Capital Group and the second T. Rowe registrant were checked and confirmed to hold nothing, recorded as notes not rows), and the JPMorgan row explicitly excludes a 150,000-share option derivative reported on a separate CUSIP. Every large row's implied price (value_usd / shares) falls in a tight $139.82-140.70 band, a strong independent cross-check that these are all the same instrument at the same date. The elevated total reflects that CDW is heavily institutionally owned (very low insider ownership at 0.84%, no founder or family control block since both former PE sponsors fully exited by 2016) with a float that has shrunk steadily from buybacks (shares outstanding fell from 128,707,881 on 1 Mar 2026 to 125,017,426 on 31 Jul 2026, about 5 months later), so a fixed absolute institutional share count represents a growing percentage of the company over time. Reported here rather than suppressed.
- The 2026 DEF 14A's own 5%-owner table (as of 1 Mar 2026, sourced to older Schedule 13G/A filings) shows Vanguard at 16,835,076 sh (13.08%, per a 13G/A filed 29 Jul 2025 as of 30 Jun 2025) and BlackRock at 10,883,748 sh (8.46%, per a 13G/A filed 25 Jan 2024 as of 31 Dec 2023). Per the brief's preference for fresh 13F data over any stale, earlier-dated 13G figure, the Q2 2026 13F sweep is used throughout for both; both moved UP between their respective stale dates and 30 Jun 2026, consistent with the brief's warning not to assume the correction runs one way (though in this company's case both of the two DEF-14A-cited holders happened to increase).
- No SC 13D has ever been filed against CDW stock; every Schedule 13 filing on record since the 2013 IPO is a 13G or 13G/A (or, since 2026, 'SCHEDULE 13G'/'SCHEDULE 13G/A' under the modernized EDGAR form-type naming), consistent with an entirely passive institutional ownership base and no activist or strategic holder to add beyond the 13F-derived rows and the officers/directors proxy aggregate above.
- Current price used for market_cap_usd is a live end-of-day quote (Nasdaq API, $137.20 close, 19 Aug 2026) multiplied by the 31 Jul 2026 cover-page share count from the most recent 10-Q (filed 5 Aug 2026, period 30 Jun 2026), the newest filing carrying a dated shares-outstanding figure as of the research date.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- Named individual director and executive officer holdings below 1% were read from the 2026 proxy's ownership table but not itemized as separate register rows since none individually reached 1% (largest was CEO Christine A. Leahy at 617,938 shares, about 0.48%); only the 15-person aggregate is recorded.
- Whether Madison Dearborn Partners or Providence Equity Partners retain any residual, unreported position below the 13G disclosure floor could not be ruled out from public filings alone; no filing since February 2016 indicates any holding, and both are absent from the current proxy and 10-K.
- JPMorgan's implied price (~$139.82/sh) is modestly below the ~$140.6-140.7/sh band seen across every other Q2 2026 filer for this company; the underlying filing figures were used as reported and the small variance was not further investigated.
