The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 970 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
970 managers reported a position, together holding 425.9m shares, or 70.9% of the company. The 40 largest are listed. Percentages are of a share count taken later than this quarter, because the count in force at the snapshot is not published as a structured fact for this company. Where the count has moved since, the figures are off by that much.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Ticker changed from SQ to XYZ (effective 2026 rebrand from Square, Inc. to Block, Inc.); CIK, EDGAR filer, and CUSIP (852234103) are unchanged. Former ticker SQ still appears in older filing filenames (e.g. sq-20260423.htm) and in the OTC line BSQKZ.
- Block has two share classes: Class A common stock (1 vote per share, publicly listed on NYSE as XYZ) and Class B common stock (10 votes per share, convertible 1-for-1 into Class A at any time, held only by insiders and not separately listed). As of the 10-Q cover page dated 31 Jul 2026: 540,816,000 Class A shares and 59,979,000 Class B shares outstanding.
- company.shares_outstanding (600,795,000) is Class A plus Class B COMBINED, chosen as the denominator because institutional 13F filers hold Class A only (their reported Class A share counts equal their total common-stock holdings, since none of them hold any Class B), while insiders Jack Dorsey and James McKelvey hold a mix of both classes. Using the combined total lets every register row's `shares` field mean the same thing (total common shares of Block, either class), avoiding the Class B-against-Class A-denominator error the brief warns about. Every row's pct_denominator is 'Class A plus Class B combined common shares outstanding (600,795,000 as of 31 Jul 2026, 10-Q cover page)'.
- The insider story: co-founder Jack Dorsey (Block Head and Chairperson) holds 1,000,000 Class A and 47,844,566 Class B shares (79.8% of all Class B). Because Class B carries 10 votes per share, this 8.13%-of-shares stake is 42.2% of Block's total voting power per the 2026 DEF 14A, making Dorsey the controlling vote even though he holds a small minority of shares outstanding. Co-founder James McKelvey holds the rest of the Class B float not held by Dorsey (11,940,025 shares, 19.9% of Class B, 10.5% of total voting power). No other current officer or director holds any Class B: 47,844,566 + 11,940,025 = 59,784,591 exactly matches the proxy's 'all directors and officers as a group' Class B total.
- Block holds bitcoin ($533.9 million carrying value in 'Bitcoin investment' on the 30 Jun 2026 10-Q balance sheet, down from $777.5 million at 31 Dec 2025) as a long-term investment, plus additional bitcoin held for Cash App customer facilitation. Per the brief, bitcoin is not an equity holding and is excluded from `holdings`; it is noted here only for completeness.
- Holdings side (equity stakes in OTHER companies) is empty by design, not by omission. The 10-K (FY2025, filed 26 Feb 2026) and the Q2 2026 10-Q (filed 5 Aug 2026) were searched for 'non-marketable equity', 'marketable equity', 'equity investments', 'equity method' and 'strategic investment'. Block discloses only COMBINED buckets with no investee named anywhere: (a) 'Investment in non-marketable equity securities' (investments in privately-held companies), carried at $103.366 million as of 30 Jun 2026, down from $423.198 million at 31 Dec 2025 after the Company received $329.8 million in June 2026 from the sale of one unnamed non-marketable equity security; (b) 'Investment in marketable equity securities' (investments in publicly-traded companies), $5.225 million at 31 Dec 2025 per the fair-value table, described in the 10-K as 'immaterial'. Neither bucket is split by investee in any filing found, so per the brief no holdings rows are written; both combined figures are recorded here and in unknowns instead of being assigned to any single company.
- Register numbers are FRESH Q2 2026 (period 30 Jun 2026) 13F-HR information tables fetched directly from each holder's own EDGAR filing, not the 31 Mar 2026 snapshot in data/registers/XYZ.json. That snapshot file was used only to enumerate WHICH entities to check (the Vanguard and Capital Group entity lists), per the brief; every share count and value in this file comes from a fresh 13F read with scripts/filing.py.
- Vanguard: the parent, The Vanguard Group, Inc. (CIK 0000102909), filed Form 13F-NT (a notice, no holdings) for Q2 2026, so per the project's rule the eight successor entities are the position and were summed (one, Vanguard National Trust Co, holds zero). Family total: 65,328,653 shares, $4,964,977,628.
- Capital Group: all six known registrants were checked (Capital World Investors, Capital International Investors, Capital Research Global Investors, Capital International Inc, Capital International Ltd, Capital International Sarl); only Capital World Investors holds Block stock (21,404,048 shares), so its single row is the family total.
- T. Rowe Price: both registrants were checked. T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc. holds 39,734,330 shares; T. Rowe Price Investment Management, Inc. (CIK 0001897612) holds nothing in Block for Q2 2026. T. Rowe's 13F information table reports dollar values IN THOUSANDS: the raw XML value (3,019,810) is $3,019,810,000, confirmed against the implied per-share price ($76.00), which matches BlackRock's and State Street's implied prices from the same filing round.
- Self-gate, computed from this final file exactly as the chart computes it (see scripts described in the research brief): 10 register rows, share total 288,143,141, equal to 47.96% of shares_outstanding (600,795,000). Within the brief's expected 25 to 55 percent band; the higher end reflects Block's unusually concentrated insider ownership (Dorsey + McKelvey alone are about 10.1% of shares and 52.7% of total votes) on top of a normal-sized institutional base (about 36.7% across the 7 institutional rows).
- Market cap and shares_outstanding cross-check: stockanalysis.com reported 600.79 million shares outstanding as of 18 Aug 2026 close, matching the 600,795,000 computed from the 10-Q cover page (Class A 540,816,000 + Class B 59,979,000) to within rounding.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- Non-marketable equity securities: $103.366 million combined carrying value (30 Jun 2026 10-Q), covering an unknown number of unnamed privately-held investees. Not split by investee in the 10-K, 10-Q, or Exhibit 21; no single investee's stake can be sized from this balance.
- Marketable equity securities: $5.225 million combined carrying value (31 Dec 2025 10-K fair-value table, described as 'immaterial'); no investee named or found in the Q2 2026 10-Q's equivalent table. Searched 10-K and 10-Q text for 'marketable equity', 'Tidal', 'equity method', 'ownership interest'; found no named public-company stake.
- Full itemized 'all current executive officers and directors as a group' breakdown: only Jack Dorsey, James McKelvey, and roughly a dozen other individual director/NEO rows were read from the DEF 14A beneficial-ownership table; the sum of individually read rows came to within about 167,506 shares of the proxy's stated group Class A total (7,892,312), a gap not reconciled to a specific missing name. Does not affect the group's stated totals used in this file, only the unlisted residual members' individual identities.
- Whether any Vanguard or Capital Group entity outside the ones checked here (e.g. further Capital International registrants beyond the six found via EDGAR company search for 'capital international') also holds Block was not exhaustively ruled out beyond the entities the brief and an EDGAR company-name search surfaced.
